3. No other profession would be asked to do this kind of work with such paltry remuneration. Can you imagine radiologists/dentists/tax attorneys being approached in this way?

2. This will continue to tighten this corporation’s grip on testing for new teachers by providing a veneer of legitimacy and buy-in by educators.

Reasons this makes me livid: 1. This request perpetuates the idea that teachers’ time is not valuable and that all education bodies (even highly profitable multinational corporations) are underfunded and need donated labor to keep afloat.

They are asking teachers to spend an unspecified amount of time reviewing testing materials. These are mandatory tests in most states. For this they will be paid either $350 OR the cost of a sub. Not both!

We seem to be caught in a loop in this country where, having determined that life can be brutal, mean and ugly, we've decided that the best response is to be more brutal, more mean, more ugly 1/

5/5 Have any of my fellow #teachered colleagues heard of this book? Have I been living under a rock and this is actually a well-known classic? The authors quote Dewey but I can’t find much about them online.

If I visited an elementary classroom that used this book as inspiration for lesson plans, I would be delighted! I’ve never heard of the authors, but clearly their concept of “sense training” is a precursor to Montessori methods as the book predates her work by a few years. 3/5

This little book from 1905 (found at a thrift store for $1) is a wonderful antidote to that misconception. It is full of classroom games and activities that are hands-on, challenging, engaging and appropriate for many developmental levels. 2/5
