Today I am at @ASTMH 🇨🇦, sitting on an expert panel about attacks on science. Canada losing its measles elimination status is the direct result of rejecting scientific breakthroughs that have saved millions of lives. Now more kids will die of a completely preventable disease.
Canada expected to lose long-standing measles-elimination status on Monday. A bruise on the country’s reputation, it could also mark return of endemic measles, with serious health consequences, by @kkirkup

@JenneLab warns - Alberta’s measles outbreak was almost inevitable. “We need reminders that the vaccine works, it’s safe, and that measles itself is dangerous — this is not a simple rite of passage,” he says. https://t.co/4K8eVtr8T7

Great article! There is always a trade off between the rights of the individual and group rights. Where we place the cutoff lies on a spectrum. A more centrist view, emphasizing group rights, has always made sense to me. It is one of the reasons life expectancy in Canada > US.

Today I called on the 🇨🇦 govt to guarantee universal, no-cost access to COVID-19 vaccines, including for every child under 12. Under the Canada Health Act, every Canadian deserves equal access to care no matter where they live or how badly their provincial govt ignores science.
