Anim students are graduating now, and while I still don't feel "qualified" yet to give advice, only 4 years into my own career... I DO hold a senior artist position at my studio, and I feel like I am trusted with that title so early because of these key things:
@tvaziri
I animated this shot in Godzilla: KOTM
I'm a huge Godzilla fan, AND this was the first real hero shot of my career. It was of utmost importance to me to not mess this one up, for both reasons.
I am still really proud of it
NUMBER ONE: be easy to work with. It SOUNDS easy to be kind and collected and do as you're told, and it IS! the problem is, you would not BELIEVE how many egos there are in the field. People who don't get their dailies in on time, people who don't follow the brief...
oh my god people are coming in in DROVES right now for this
first of all thank you guys for all the love for this shot! Im totally overwhelmed 🥹
also some of the comments and qrts on this are so funny ily guys

round up:
Be cool, do your notes, get updates in on time, communicate, check your ego, and remember there is something to take away from EVERYTHING you work on, even if it was learning to be as professional and hard-working on the project you don't care about vs the one you do
Especially starting out, just be a team player, man! Don't get whiney when you get notes, PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR DUE DATES, communicate with your coordinator or supervisor if you're having issues, learn to take good notes and apply them to your shots, and you'll be fine.
people who don't want to do the notes their supervisors give them, people who continue to work on shots they aren't supposed to while their high prio shots get ignored for days, people who can't accept creative changes on their shots, people "too good" for grunt shots...
@tvaziri
I got to animate a lot of the bear in Prey, and that was a lot of fun in itself because big mean animals is what I love animating most.
but this shot was my pride and joy all show long. It made me very happy to see that it became a bit of an iconic shot in the final film too!
two: speaking of grunt/unimpressive shots, don't underestimate them. some of my best shots originally started out very simple, then ended up being either A) way more complex than it started or B) a beloved moment for the viewers
Mothra climbing Godzilla was both of these things
if you're not putting effort into your work because you don't care about the project, everyone WILL notice.
you might think you can "win" this and get moved to the other show, but you proved your professionalism is conditional and it might factor in to your contract extension
I'm very happy to share my 2022 3D animation demo reel! ♥🐻✈🐕🦺🦖
Had lots of exciting shots come out this year that I am very proud of! I am even more excited for what's to come next year~
Same with projects you think you won't like. It's especially easy to get envious of the flashier, more exciting-looking project at your studio. You might think that other project will be "the big one", but it ends up being the one that flops. you NEVER know.
random anim tip I learned 2 years ago that I use alllll the time:
if you have something zooming through your scene that you have to chase around in space when you scrub your timeline (a sprinting character, a moving vehicle, etc) make a simple followcam:
other 3d artists on twitter: sharing awesome WIPs from their personal projects every day
me, only animating for work on things I wont be able to share for months:
aaAAA I only had time to watch the first episode tonight but I LOVED it
and! This is the one I had a part in ♥♥♥
(Uncredited this time but eh u dont always win)

! You are now aware that I have autism.
It doesn't come up much, but it's not a secret.
I mask it well now, but in grade school I did not.
I used to be afraid I'd never keep up in the workforce. Now I'm a valued key team member in my dream job.
If your animation isn’t looking so hot and you’re feeling frustrated, don’t forget that you can’t be great at something unless you’re willing to be bad at it.
Fail boldly, learn what you can from that attempt, and try again. It’s the only way to grow.

I did advice for graduates entering the industry, here's just some quick tips for people who are about to start their first animation classes soon
again, NONE of this is anything new. Just worth repeating because its true and important!
(No statements on art schools, just tips)
quick vfx animation advice:
do quadrupeds.
different kinds of (existing) quad animals.
seems intimidating? Wellll the recruiter always wants to see it and projects always need it
I was updating one of my reels and realized like 90% of my career so far has been quadruped animals
me animating big changes and complex, large motions: omg this is going to take me all dayyyyy
reality: 1-2 hours
me animating a tiny subtle thing: this will be like a 5 minute thing, nbd
reality: half day headache
Happy NYE time for me to shove my 2021 demo reel in your face again
:)
Nothing really changed from last year, I just enjoy the ritual of making a new one each end-of-year.
I'm proud of myself, and very excited for the things I'll get to cut in next year... (knock on wood)
One more time! ✈
I updated my Top Gun: Maverick animation showreel, this time nearly double the length as it was before with better quality stuff, and shots I forgot last time~
@fxtech_paul
Thank you!
To be honest, I don’t think I did.
I remember specifically thinking of things like ice climbers, and incorporating everything I knew to make something look tired (like wobbly limbs, slowww feet dragging but with heavy, fast plants)
@zemthings
yeah, exactly. it's suuuuper basic advice, and I think every professor tells their students at some point that people would rather keep the person on the team who is easy to work with than the person with more skills but is a pain....
they say it because its TRUE
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I ALSO THOUGHT THAT VFX WAS SOULLESS UNTIL I REALIZED THE PUBLIC NARRATIVE AROUND VFX WAS THE SOLE REASON I FELT THAT WAY AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE CRAFT PUT A LOT OF PRIDE AND EFFORT INTO THE ARTFORM ONLY TO CONSTANTLY BE SHAT ON BY PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY RUIN-
Every time.
me starting a difficult shot: Oh god how am I going to do this? This is gonna kick my ass. This one, for sure, will break me.
me after hammering away at it for a bit: Wait actually this is fine
@ElyseGymer
starting out, I posed the most extreme poses and then moved keys to offset and overlap at the end. Now I build offset and overlap into my poses. Timing out weight is so much easier, and my blocking looks more refined while still being simple keys
create a camera
group that camera to itself
parent the group to the thing that’s moving. Preferably something neutral and just doing the main forward movement, like the hips or COG.
you can now use that cam as your new persp, with free tumbling ability
DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE BOUNCING BALL AND THE TAIL.
Work on nailing these early assignments. EVERYTHING is a bouncing ball or a tail.
EVERYTHING.
ITS ALL BOUNCING BALLS AND TAILS.
yyyyYYAAYYYYYY I finally get to say I worked on WandaVision!!!! (ღ◕ヮ◕ღ)
Only for a little bit, but I definitely had to put my back into it. Regardless, it was a huge honor working on a Marvel project as a big fan myself ♥
I made a 3d rig of one of my characters, Fernando the Uni-Giraffe, and I am fervently reminded why I only specialize in animation.
dear god, his legs are rigged absolutely atrociously. But I will animate him at least one time. I swear my struggles will not be in vain.
Unless you're the director, animation in the field will always be executing someone else's vision, not yours. If you're afraid your creativity is going to be stifled, find it in other ways. Find the creativity in how your character fidgets, or how your creature sniffs, etc

@jeandenishaas
dropping awesome animation and industry advice yet again 🙌
seriously, I know a lot of students and junior artists follow me who seem hungry for tips, I HIGHLY suggest looking at his channel. So much invaluable, non-sugarcoated knowledge totally for free
@tvaziri
nearly lost my mind the day I watched the featurette that came with the Top Gun Maverick blu ray because not only did they cut to a vfx shot, it was one of mine
The range of emotions I went through in a span of 2 seconds was something to behold, I think
Oh!! Omg!!! I just learned about the VFX Oscars shortlist
listen, I KNOW the academy awards are controversial every year, and nobody cares unless its THEIR favorite movie, but...
Ive had a pipe dream to work on a VFX Oscar nominee for years, so I feel like Im floating a little
@heyitskitrace
@RothAnim
☝☝☝☝ I am training someone RIGHT NOW who is hearing a lot of vfx vocabulary for the first time and needs explanations. He asks a lot of questions, which is great, because I'd rather take 5 minutes to explain than have him struggle for weeks!!!! Or worse!
@Arran_Baker
give feedback to help us make our shot look the best it can be, USING our creative ideas while making sure it accomplishes what the client wants at the same time.
Rather than totally bulldozing what little creative input we already have because you want to animate through us.
fave that’s public, at least 👀
actually it’s SO hard to choose from my Prey shots because I had a lot of fun on each one, but I really enjoyed animating the thrashing in this one and trying to figure out how to get the predator to throw a bear
this was extremely helpful on shows like Bloodshot, where there was a free falling elevator sequence. It would have been impossible to animate the things on the elevator if we didn’t have a camera following it that we could tumble like normal persp
or just QCing a run cycle :)
in some circumstances it might get slapped around by the ol gimbal lock, but it helps a lot for fast moving scenes
anyway. Simple, but hey, maybe you didn’t know it already :)
Regarding the conversation surrounding ‘
@NapoleonMovie
having no CGI’. Below are the VFX credits. The film has some amazing VFX, stunt and practical FXs, including exploding body parts, exploding horses, exploding boats, crowd duplication, full CG boats, full CG environments all…
random anim tip for beginners or people who just dont grasp the terminology yet:
starting out, if asked, I could never remember which mode was called IK and which was called FK
until: IK = icky sticky. because the limbs will "stick" in place.
so there ya go
You'll hear it once you'll hear it a hundred times, but your teachers/professors are your first connections. Especially if they are currently working professionals who plan to scout students for their studios.
Watch your behavior in class!
There's an ongoing raffle at work to win studio swag
I saw someone else win a hat
I wanted to win a hat
Today I won a hat
All day I was like this with my hat
I am a simple woman
The Animation Principles terminology DOES get used on a daily basis throughout your career, for both vfx and cartoony animation (anticipation, overlap, follow through, arc, etc) so when you inevitably learn them in your first classes, try to not forget them
LISTEN I was forgotten when they ordered the official crew shirts and I tried (and failed) so hard to get a hold of one for months because this movie was my Pride of the Year (well, the Pride of the Year
#1
) so I made one MYSELF
I get to have a little narcissism, as a treat
I'm not asking you to be the best artist ever right out of the gate (EVERYONE LEARNS AT THEIR OWN PACE) but showing up on time, getting your homework done on time, and being accepting of critique are good indicators of your future professional work ethic
Learn how to mentally handle critique ASAP. Some people just cannot stand hearing that their animation isn't perfect first try. Some people can't handle hearing that the story or acting isn't clear and should be changed.
You'll be getting critiques your whole career.
You know me. I dont post politics ever. BUT..

Full disrespect, GTFO.
Anti-Vax and anti-BLMs too, get outta here.
I'm tired. No more godzillas and dinos for you. 🖕♥
@Panciraptor
Thank you so much!! 🥹
I am extremely happy to be a part of Godzilla (and Mothra!!!) movie history and Im so glad a lot of people are still reacting so strongly <333
casual reminder there are factors at play behind every single shot that you will never know about 😘
