Adding this here as a good summation
I think what’s missing from this debate is how broad the term journalist is. My view is also more nuanced now than it used to be. I was an evangelist, but I’m not anymore (in part because I’ve been out of local news a long time)

In perhaps the most beige of views I think shorthand is way more useful than some give it credit for and way less essential than some make it out to be. And, yes, I’ve still kept the certificate.

I think this debate is super interesting (it rolls around every so often, we last covered it in 2021), mainly for the strength of views it elicits on both sides.
For the last couple of days I’ve been having some interesting chats with people here who call themselves journalists and don’t do shorthand. I’ve argued as best I can that it’s essential for many reasons. Not least, legal and professional requirements. You can only try so much.
