Meanwhile, college football has a four-team playoff with the same four teams every year. (sigh)
My lasting impression of Rondo came in locker room scrum after Anthony Davis had 53 vs. Suns:
Me: You’ve played with & against a lot of great players in your career. Can you put into perspective what A.D. is doing right now?
Rondo: Whatcha want me to do? Suck him off?
Me: Uh.
Ex-Saints WR Joe Horn said he saw Michael Thomas’ honorary TD celebration while working out in Tupelo, Miss. “When I saw him bring out that cellphone it brought a tear to my eye,” Horn said. “For him to pay homage to me in that way, let me know what kind of man Michael Thomas is"
I realize this isn't a popular take, but I'm somewhat befuddled by the sequencing of The Last Dance. Is anyone else finding the chronology difficult to follow? A lot of confusing bouncing around between seasons.
Drew Brees leads the NFL in QB rating (115.7), completion percentage (74.4), game-winning drives (7) & fourth-quarter comebacks (6). He is 6-1 against teams with winning records. And most important, his team has the best record in the NFL: 13-2.
He’s the MVP.
Joe Horn also had a message for Michael Strahan, who was critical of both Horn & Thomas’ end-zone antics. “Michael Strahan got 4 touchdowns scored on his ass (by Horn in the Saints’ 45-7 win against the Giants in '03) that’s why he didn’t like it. That’s why he’s being negative."

If the Saints can win three of their next six games and get to the bye week at the midway point of the season at 4-4, they can make a second-half run when Brees returns. Their season is far from lost. But make no mistake, this the biggest challenge of the Payton-Brees era.
A thread with comments from former Saints receiver Joe Horn, who reached out to express his thoughts on Drew Brees & his comments today
Horn: “People should not be throwing Drew Brees under the bus, and they definitely need to pump the brakes on labeling him a racist. (contd.)
So David Griffin has turned Anthony Davis into four first-round draft picks (Nos. 8 & 17 in 2019, 2021 & 2024), a swap of 2023 first-rounders and a high 2nd round pick.
This is the NBA’s version of the Herschel Walker trade.
Zion Williamson’s step-father, Lee Anderson, says on the Off the Bench radio show in Baton Rouge that Zion is "excited about the prospect of getting down there and getting settled” in New Orleans & added that returning to Duke “is not something that we have even considered."
Sean Payton said on his coaches' show that he was told after Sunday's win vs. DEN that he had now beaten all 31 NFL teams. He told them that stat was inaccurate
"It's 32 teams. Tampa Bay, 2007. It's late we're winning and run the double-reverse & fumble. I beat the Saints, too."
Without Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara and Jared Cook, the Saints have hung 36 points & 419 yards on the NFL's 6th-ranked defense.
Somebody give a game ball to Sean Payton and the entire Saints coaching staff.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen flew to Los Angeles on Thursday night to meet with Michael Thomas today. The get-together is basically a chance for the coach and star receiver to get to know each other better as they begin preparations for the 2022 season.
I've seen a lot of great coaching jobs by Sean Payton, but this might just be his finest hour:
• No Brees
• No Kamara
• No Cook
• On the road
• Vs. a desperate team
.... And the Saints aren't just winning, they're dominating, 26-10 & making it look easy.
On the day of his release, Thomas Morstead and wife Lauren went to the Saints training complex and personally said thanks and goodbye to staffers in various departments throughout the building, everyone from the equipment and training staff to the accounting department.

Super Bowl LV has a strong La. flavor:

• K. Minter (LSU)
• D. White (LSU)
KC
• C. Edwards-Helaire (LSU)

The Saints are expected to sign Blake Bortles today, per sources. He will practice with the team today and be the backup quarterback to Ian Book on Monday night.
The Saints finished 2017 ranked No. 2 in total offense (391.2 yards per game). Here’s where the Saints have ranked offensively in the 12 years of Sean Payton-Drew Brees era:
2017: 2
2016: 1
2015: 2
2014: 1
2013: 4
2012: 2
2011: 1
2010: 6
2009: 1
2008: 1
2007: 4
2006: 1
When Drew Brees was injured two weeks ago, few people had the Saints winning their next two games vs. the Seahawks & Cowboys. But here they are, at 3-1 in first place in the NFC South and tied with 5 other teams for the second best record in the NFC.
The Saints have become a Quarterback Training School under Sean Payton and Drew Brees. They take in veteran backup QBs, develop them and send them back out into the world for starting jobs.
In his past two games, Drew Brees is 58-70, 658 yards, 9 TDs, 0 INTs.
That's an 82.8 completion percentage & 145.4 passer rating.
Any questions about his thumb ... or his arm strength. .. or his age?
Taysom Hill is expected to start his fourth consecutive game at QB for the Saints on Sunday vs. Philly. I'm told his three-game performance as the starter has only bolstered the confidence internally that he is the eventual heir apparent to Drew Brees' job.
Drew Brees' final official act with the local press corps was a memorable one: After the cameras were turned off & the mics silenced, he made his way to each reporter/photographer in the scrum & personally thanked them for their coverage during his 15-year career in NOLA.

Just got off the phone with Sean Payton. He's stoked about the chance to coach the Broncos: "Great fanbase. Great tradition. The ownership group is fantastic, and I love the way they competed last year. It's a great football city like we had in New Orleans."
More to come soon...
Saints owner Gayle Benson said Drew Brees offered her the game ball from his record performance Monday vs. the Colts. She politely declined, settling instead for a photo of herself & Brees posed with the ball. Benson is the godmother to Brees' daughter, Rylen.
The Saints -- yes, the Saints! -- now lead the NFL in total defense (284.9 ypg) after yesterday's rout of the Broncos.
The Saints have never finished a season as the No. 1 defense in the league. They have finished 2nd three times: 1983, 1991 and 1992.
On Jan. 5, 2011, Steve Gleason was officially diagnosed with ALS. He was given 3-5 years to live.
Eleven years, two kids and untold amounts of life-changing work later, he's still going strong .👊

One final story about Jameis Winston ... He was recently invited to the wedding of one of the Saints equipment managers. Not only did he, along with his wife and a few teammates, attend the service, but he addressed the reception party afterward and blessed the marriage.
I have no doubt that if the Saints had made the playoffs, they would represented themselves better and been more competitive than the debacles we’ve watched the last two days by Philly and Zona. And I don’t care who the QB would have been.
Well deserved.
@ThomasMorstead
had arguably the best game by a punter in Saints history on Sunday:
• 6 punts
• 52-yard net average
• 4 downed inside the 20
• 2 inside the 5
• long punt of 64 yards
Oh, & he did it in the rain at one of the most hostile venues in the NFL.
Alvin Kamara's refusal to wear the contract tracing device issued by the NFL and mandated for all players and coaches was an internal issue all season, multiple team sources said. Because of this, the league had no way to trace Kamara's close contacts after he tested positive.
My favorite quote on Drew Brees comes from his longtime performance coach Tom House:
“Drew is a superstar without superpowers. Drew will have a spectacular play or two, but he’s not a spectacular quarterback. He’s just the best fucker who’s ever thrown a football.”
The refs appeared to have botched the call on the Saints' opening drive vs MIN. Cesar Ruiz was ruled an ineligible man downfield on a screen to Mark Ingram, but Ingram caught the ball behind the line of scrimmage, making Ruiz legal. Same scenario on MIN's 1st TD & refs let it go.
Morstead: "People say don’t invest in the team or don’t invest in a city. That's like saying, never love somebody because you might get hurt or it's going to end. I never subscribed to that. I've been all in. I loved this city & they’ve loved me back a hundred times more."
A debt of gratitude to the Saints medical staff who have now twice detected a serious disease during a routine physical.
Long-snapper Jon Dorenbos found out he had an aortic aneurysm that required open-heart surgery when he took his physical …
In my opinion and the opinion of every player or coach who ever worked with him, Drew Brees is the greatest quarterback of all-time. He doesn’t need some stupid list to acknowledge that fact.
Sean Payton was understandably still simmering in his post-game press conference. He said the coaching staff will consider personnel changes with players who continue to commit self-inflicted mistakes and fail to make plays.
Extraordinary revelation: The Bucs didn't run a single play in the Saints' red zone. Closest they got in 73 plays was the Saints' 21. In fact, they ran just 3 plays all night inside the Saints' 35. And the Bucs came into the game leading the NFL in scoring offense & total offense
Just noticed this from a video on the Saints Instagram account.... Tom Brady didn't exactly give great effort in trying to prevent P.J. Williams' Pick 6 on Sunday...
@realRaySessions
That's right. College football has created that disparity. They need to create more parity by reducing scholarships and opening up the sport to more schools. It will take time but eventually the sport will be better and more interesting.
The Saints have had many dominant performances in the Sean Payton-Drew Brees era. But this might be their most impressive one ever, considering the quality of the opponent and that it came outside the Superdome. Just a complete and utter beatdown in every phase of the game.
People close to Sean Payton think he's going to coach in 2023. I asked one of them to rank where he'd most likely coach. He listed the Saints No. 1.
Jeff Duncan: If Sean Payton is going to coach somewhere in 2023, it needs to be the Saints via
@nolanews
The Saints' entire 2017 draft class started in W1.
What a class.
• R1: CB Marshon Lattimore, NO
• R1: RT Ryan Ramczyk, NO
• R2: FS Marcus Williams, BAL
• R3: CB Alvin Kamara, NO
• R3: LB Alex Anzalone, DET
• R3: DE Trey Hendrickson, CIN
• R6: DE Al-Quadin Muhammad, CHI
The offensive star power for the Bucs-Saints opener is insane:
• Tom Brady
• Drew Brees
• Mike Thomas
• Rob Gronkowski
• Alvin Kamara
• Leonard Fournette
• Mike Evans
• Emmanuel Sanders
• Chris Godwin
• Jared Cook
Would be fitting -- and very much on brand -- if Drew Brees announced his retirement today, on the 15-year anniversary of his signing with the New Orleans

The only black man on Eastern Illinois’ swim team was wearing his EIU jacket on a road trip with his teammates when police tackled and handcuffed him. An officer pointed a gun at his head and told him, “If you move, I'll blow your (expletive) head off.”
