Ever notice autistic stims creepily termed “restrictive repetitive behaviors” ? …meanwhile, society trains in “mindfulness meditation”. To focus on sensing/feeling in the moment, because it’s good for health and wellbeing. 🧐

Having now experienced 6 children go or going through the secondary system I couldn’t agree more. I have witnessed 6 intelligent kids all become switched off learning, especially in English where they had so much potential the way they construct arguments at home!

A Deputy Head of a Primary school said to me today: The #earlyyears is the most important stage of #primaryeducation. If you get it wrong, you spend the next 6 years trying to put it right. If you get it right, you can spend the next 6 years building on it. Couldn't agree more

Choose courage. Choose right. Choose values. Choose the harder path. Choose not to sit at that table anymore.

I’ve said it before, education staff should be allowed to “swap” with other educators for a term up to a year. Instead I’ve been relief teaching this year and I have LOVED it. Best on the job PL; exposure to new programs, pedagogy, networks, ideas and mostly bring back spark!

“Otherwise things would never change” Different brains aren’t new. They’ve always been around. They aren’t overdiagnosed, they are being identified. If we keep telling kids “that isn’t the right way”, then we may just miss an opportunity to learn something new ourselves.

🎶 This issss how we do it 🎶 Autistic advocates for autistic people. Let’s break the mold of how autism is viewed. If you know 1 autistic person you only know 1 autistic person. THIS is so important to our nation. To the world. I applaud you @edu_sagov and @emsbourke !

I have always said “kids need the why”. Even more so in our changing world. Being the adult in a room no longer commands respect, it is earned through relationships. If you don’t already, start listening to chn’s reasoning. You might just find yourself making needed change.

Students work harder for teachers they respect, that care about them, and help them be their best! Relationships before rigor.

Just because some teachers would rather stay in the classroom than go into administration doesn’t mean they aren’t leaders. Many have amazing talents which can benefit a school. Good leaders value them as experts and help maximize their talents for betterment of school & students

Emotions before all else. An anxious brain cannot learn. An anxious child isn’t always obvious. Take a look at your quiet, under the radar children. They are often the most anxious. Notice. Observe. Are they learning?

“An anxious brain cannot learn…anxiety sends the ‘thinking’ brain offline…relational safety first, then the way for learning and behaviour will open up” . Reinforced by @EnhancingEl’s 5 switches in their Turn On Learning Framework. If the safe switch is off a child won’t learn.
