research- rant 🧵
My friend's paper on "aurat march" media discourse got desk rejection from local journal of a private university because they can't consider "controversial topic." When asked what's controversial about it, the highly qualified editor aka desi dude
Old books show in Anarkali is my forever fascination. Lined up on the road, outside closed shuttered doors of banks & and other businesses, heaps of used books & pirated editions of new titles keep attracting readers. So many tales!

So, my little monograph is going into production at Bloomsbury Academic. There will be so many posts from this account about it that some of you may end up muting me, but for now, sharing the front matter!
#mybook
refused to answer that. Had to share this because there are so many out there who believe that there is nothing wrong with our patriarchal mind set. We can't even publish research on Paksitani women!
Procrastinating and bringing up blasts from the recent past: book selfies from 2021 and 2022. Facncy bookshops are cool, but exploring old books on foot paths, going over their browned and torn pages, and haggling over all prices will always be my favourite bookish activity.
Feeling grateful, anxious, & apprehensive while looking at the final proofs of my upcoming publication with Bloomsbury Academic! Sharing, again, because it is the niche heart thumping academic moment, vibe, syndrome, etc.

Made this painting of the little lawn, next to the main entrance of our home, a year after Papa left this world. Painted the space as it used to be years ago, before all the plants and trees were carefully selected and added by him. Just felt like sharing it now, in his memory.
End of the semester tea with lovely students of Pakistani literature in English. There were many fun discussions over the few months & we realised the need to have a lot more talks/research on this emerging discipline.

Semester highlight: teaching "Pakistani Literature." Authors writing in English have done so much work & it is time that academia acknowledges it as a rich area of literary studies. Looking forward to learning nuances of some amazing texts with my students.

Proud supervisor moment!
My three brilliant students successfully completed their research degree today. Their research is on the reception of the Bridgerton series in Pakistan, street theatre, and representation of women in Paksitani dramas.

In the end, we're left with memories only. My lovely bright student brought this cake for me recently & told me that I made a difference for her. She had big plans. Sharing beacuse she just passed away today & it is so hard to process this photo now.
Rest in peace, Syeda Iqra🖤

I don't respond to mean folks usually, but this is about my students, so I have to tell you that each one of them is more knowledgeable, well spoken, and heaps more worthy than any faceless, rude person. They'll go places while you will sulk away on Twitter🏆
Looking at my school-hood photo, taken during girl-guides' camp at my beautiful alam mater, Crescent Model. It's funny how that time feels so prehistoric, yet so yesterday. All those ropes, knots, and super silly songs are so tangibly alive in memory.

My write-up: Pakistani dramas "have a long history of masking toxic masculinity as love...The glory of the hero willing to let go of his wealth and status for the woman he loves, successfully glosses over the questions of consent and clear harassment."
Exhausting and chaotic time of the semester... but one wide expanse of yellow orange glory makes everything worthwhile !
