UPDATED: After several months (if not years) of trying to build out more stats about the actual number of Division I schools that once had wrestling, I've come to the following conclusion.
215 schools, since the formation of D1 for the 1973-1974 season have had wrestling.

Sucks to aspire to be a D1 athlete only to have your perceived worth be less valuable to a university than what you mean on a balance sheet. Cutting sports is always the lazy, unoriginal way out of problems made by others.
Earlier today, LMU Athletics announced plans to refocus efforts to support 14 intercollegiate sports teams. Six programs will be discontinued at the end of the 2023-24 competitive season. For more information, see the announcement.
