The UK-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) trade Agreement must not lead to an increase in numbers of UK farmed animals slaughtered without first being stunned, nor undermine British farmers by allowing the importation of lower-welfare meat products.

The Government’s response is from @DanielZeichner who says this debate (3rd in 3 weeks) shows the support for farmed animal welfare. Recognises the need not to fall behind other nations, work with industry and that these are issues now being carefully considered….

@DrNeilHudson … makes important point that government must uphold animal welfare standards in trade, such as hormone fed beef but also including the use of crates and cages, urges Government to elaborate on the consultation response on #HonestLabelling and to address welfare in procurement.

Received a lot of heartfelt messages on this, says @DannyVet. Urges Government to work with all stakeholders to develop a national strategy to shift away from crates and cages for intelligent animals with their own personalities who can feel pain.

The need to label products so consumers can shop in line with their values is highlighted by @JoshNewburyMP. #HonestLabelling would allow consumers to support higher welfare farmers, assist those transitioning and should apply to both imported and domestically produced foods.
