I wonder why the US, with all its might, money, influence and access to information, is misreading the situation in
#Ethiopia
.
Its blind-support for the TPLF rebel group and unwillingness to consider reality on the ground - is making America - not great.
Members of the
#Ethiopian
community in
#Britain
protesting in London today against ‘foreign intervention’.
They claim the west (mainly the US) is trying to overthrow their Government led by
@AbiyAhmedAli
and want to bring the TPLF back to power.
‘We are brothers. We are sisters. I don’t have any problem with anybody. But I have a problem with someone who put down my
#Ethiopia
- my country.’
Haile Gebresellassie.
The
#NoMore
movement was started to counter the TPLF rebels on social media & to support the Govt of
#Ethiopia
. But it's since gained support from pan-African groups & anti-imperialists and is growing bigger.
Conflict in Ethiopia is attracting people from different backgrounds.
See my analysis back in May last year. While western ‘experts’ were predicting the return of
#TPLF
to Addis in ‘months if not weeks’, I have often said that the TPLF rebels won’t rule
#Ethiopia
ever again. Understanding local context is important.
#Ethiopia
: School children in
#Woldia
hugging and happy to see each other. Last time they had classes was end of June. The conflict denied them the right to education.
A few weeks ago there’s real fear that
#Ethiopia
’s capital Addis would fall into the hands of TPLF rebels.
But today, there are massive events celebrating & welcoming Diaspora Ethiopians who played a key role in preventing TPLF retaking control of Addis and country in general.
#Ethiopian
officials are more hopeful today than they were few days ago in turning the conflict in their favour. They sound confident that they will recapture Dessie and Kombolcha from TPLF ‘soon’. The people ‘have awoken’ - one of them told me.
Breaking:
#Ethiopian
Govt forces have recaptured Dessie and Kombolcha - two strategic cities. I was there over a month ago and just before the TPLF rebels took control.
A week ago,
#Ethiopia
's PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
vowed to lead the army 'from the battlefront'. Since then, his military has been claiming daily victories on the battlefield against the TPLF rebel group.
Breaking: Unconfirmed reports say that the
#Ethiopian
military has captured Mekelle, capital of
#Tigray
. Meanwhile peace talks between the Govt and TPLF rebels happening in
#SouthAfrica
.
Since the Govt has the upper hand in the war - Will the TPLF now accept defeat & disarm?
Just last month, Tigrayan rebels TPLF had the momentum - seizing strategic territories & threatening to march to Addis. But
#Ethiopia
's PM,
@AbiyAhmedAli
, made the decision to go to the frontline. With his forces winning recent battles, it seems to be paying off.
I travelled to Kobo, northern
#Ethiopia
to interview witnesses and relatives who say hundreds of
#Amharas
were massacred by
#Tigrayan
rebels or the TPLF. They showed me mass graves. Tune in to
@Channel4News
tonight at 7pm.
#Ethiopia
's PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
at the frontline: "What we want to see is Ethiopia that stands on our sacrifices - either to be Ethiopian or to be Ethiopia.'
Initial reports coming out of areas recently retaken by
#Ethiopian
forces show immense destruction. Residents in these places say the TPLF rebel group, who controlled for few weeks, massacred people, gang raped women and girls, destroyed properties and looted food and medicines.
The
#Somali
Government sent ‘an athlete’ to represent the nation. Problem was that the ‘sprinter’ has never ran before.
We later found out ‘the athlete’ is actually the niece of Somalia’s Head of Athletics Fed. No wonder - the Somali Govt is the most corrupt in the world.
Some of the western media are saying, ‘international community,’ ‘the world’ is against
#Ethiopia
’s PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
We know the US, UK & EU have fallen out with Abiy
But China, India. Russia, Africa… work with him
So, what’s international community - the world?
#JustAsking
These two men I am interviewing have lived in the US for years, have families there but came back to
#Ethiopia
to join Fano,
#Amhara
militia, to fight the TPLF. I also spoke with other Fano fighters from elsewhere.
You can see the story on
@Channel4News
this evening
#Ethiopia
's PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
is attracting prominent figures from the Pan-African Movement - renowned Prof Lumumba addressed Ethio Parliament this week
PM Abiy is establishing himself as
#African
leader standing up to the West. His predecessor, TPLF, was seen as a western puppet
‘The Nairobi Mafia,’ a term used by Somalis to describe a coalition of diplomats, journalists, so-called experts, consultants, international NGOs, former Somali warlords, and businessmen.
This group has now turned their attention to
#Ethiopia
.
You often see pro-TPLF western 'experts' claiming that under Meles,
#Ethiopia
was peaceful, the economy was growing, life was amazing...
Tell that to the millions of TPLF victims; Oromos, Somalis, Amharas and other communities - who were massacred, raped and starved to death.
In the early days of the conflict between Government of
#Ethiopia
and
#Tigray
rebels or TPLF (designated as terrorist by Addis), Tigray rebels were dominant on the propaganda front but it now seems the Govt is gaining the upper hand. That’s just my observation.
I wonder why?
#Kenyan
authorities investigating bank accounts – some held in the name of
@ahmednasirlaw
– which 'contain potentially dirty money which authorities believe is used to launder proceeds of corruption, tax evasion and drug dealing.'
Many of the western media are describing
#Ethiopia
as “a war-torn country”.
That’s inaccurate.
We know there’s a war in Tigray and ethnic conflicts in several regions. But this is a big country with 115 million people and for the most, it’s peaceful.
US'
@PowerUSAID
is visiting
#Ethiopia
this week.
Top Ethiopian officials say that the US is pushing for a regime change and is determined to bring the TPLF back in power. This raises questions about concepts such as:
- Democracy
- Sovereign Nation
- Human Rights
1/
Is
#Ethiopia
looking to the east?
PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
is in
#Turkey
.
Meanwhile, the relationship between the west & Ethiopia has been worsening. The US & Europe are supporting the TPLF which ruled Ethiopia for many years and want to overthrow the current admin led by PM Abiy.
#China
's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the
#Ethiopian
government is capable of managing the conflict in
#Tigray
. And that his country opposes international pressure on PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
without the same being applied on rebel groups.
Currently editing a story filmed in-around Kombolcha after
#Ethiopian
forces recaptured the area.
Gruesome scenes of so many bodies of TPLF fighters & their vehicles left behind indicate the fighting was intense.
The story will be on
@Channel4News
early next week.
The anti-Abiy alliance are united in overthrowing the
#Ethiopian
PM but don’t agree on most things. Oromo leaders, for example, don’t trust the TPLF. After all, Oromos suffered terribly under the TPLF-rule and after years of protest managed to bring down the then regime.
Getting credible info that TPLF elites, living outside
#Ethiopia
, gathering in Nairobi.
Are they meeting their western backers there?
Will
#Kenya
become TPLF’s new foreign base?
How is this going to affect the relationship between
#Ethiopia
and
#Kenya
?
As
#Ethiopians
commemorate the Battle of Adwa today in which they defeated
#Italians
- some can be seen waving the
#Russian
flag. Why?
In the current conflict between the
#Ethiopian
Govt &
#TPLF
rebels, Moscow supported PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
, while the West sided with Tigrayan rebels.
Early this year, I travelled Kobo in the Amhara Region in northern
#Ethiopia
- TPLF rebels captured again.
Amhara community members told me that TPLF rebels killed any young man they suspected of working against them. We uncovered several mass graves.
BREAKING:
#Ethiopian
Prime Minister
@AbiyAhmedAli
vows to lead his country's troops 'from the battlefront' in war against the TPLF rebel group.
'Starting tomorrow, I will mobilise to the front to lead the defence forces,” said PM Abiy.
See these two photos of
#Kenya
's Foreign Affairs Minister Raychelle Omamo meeting with her counterpart from the

#Africa
In a leaked audio clip, two top UN figures in
#Ethiopia
(Maureen Achieng, IOM chief and Dennia Gayle, UNFPA's head) complained about UN officials who were sympathetic towards the TPLF rebel group.
Both have been recalled.
Is there a power struggle within the UN in Ethiopia?
Since
#Tigray
rebels took over control Mekelle two weeks ago, there have been credible reports of human rights violations. That the rebels are executing people they regard as collaborators of the Govt in Addis, they are killing captured soldiers (POWs) & using child soldiers. 1/
TPLF-loyalists should understand that selective justice is injustice. You can empathise with civilians in Tigray, mass-raped and massacred and also highlight crimes committed by the TPLF, who ruled
#Ethiopia
for nearly three decades but now designated as a terrorist group. 1/
The Economist reports that the
#Ethiopian
‘Government forces on closing on Mekelle, Tigray’a capital.’ Others, though unconfirmed, say Mekelle Airport and other strategic locations are already under the control of the Govt forces and
#TPLF
rebels are on the run.
#Somalis
used to see Gabre - a top TPLF official - everywhere. Known as the butcher of Mogadishu, he and other TPLF commanders killed hundreds of thousands of Somali civilians.
Somalis are now asking:
#WhereIsGabre
?
#Tigray
rebels in
#Ethiopia
known as TPLF are accused of “striking communities and a religious site with artillery, killing civilians, looting health centers and schools and sending hundreds of thousands of people fleeing in the past two months.”

On patrol with the Liyu Police -
#Somali
Region of
#Ethiopia
’s special forces. They told me that they have seen increased activities from Al-Shabab at the border - trying to take advantage of the conflict in the north.
On
@Channel4News
this evening.
The relationship between the
#Ethiopian
Government on one side, and America, Europe and their agencies on the other, is worsening. The leadership in Addis Ababa feel that the allies in the west is supporting the TPLF, a rebel group designated as a terrorist group by the Govt.
Tonight, we have a report from Woldia in
#Amhara
Region of
#Ethiopia
. People told me they’ve endured months of hell under the occupation of TPLF rebels.
In every small neighbourhood I went to, I heard accounts of systematic sexual violence.
Tune in to
@Channel4News
at 7pm.
The
#Somali
State in eastern
#Ethiopia
had its delayed election yesterday. Sources tell me the Governing Prosperity Party is expected to win.
What matters most for Somalis in that region, who suffered under the brutal TPLF regime for 27 years, is that they now have peace.
This man (photo) is Zakariye, ex-Head of Al-Shabaab Intelligence. He orchestrated many attacks including the Westgate Mall in Nairobi. Now, he works for the Somali Govt & is protected by his cousin
@M_Farmaajo
. I understand he regularly travels to Nairobi & often visits Westgate.
Reports indicate the Govt of
#Ethiopia
will capture
#Tigray
'soon'. Addis says it's important to take "immediate control of all airports, other federal facilities, and instillations in the region. This is necessary to protect Ethiopia's sovereignty and territorial integrity…"
The
#Somali
Region of
#Ethiopia
is by far the most peaceful region in Ethiopia. I was there last week.
But under the brutal TPLF-regime, led by Zenawi,
#Somalis
were tortured, raped and massacred for many years. They are now enjoying peace.
Finally, the TPLF-loyalists or remnants must accept the reality - the TPLF is DEAD. They may fight in the mountains but they are not going to rule Ethiopia ever again. The people of Tigray, Ethiopia and in the Horn suffered terribly under the TPLF. 9/
#Ethiopian
artists pledging to support the Government in its fight against the
#Tigray
rebels. At an event in Addis Ababa this morning, they say they will go to the frontline to sing for the soldiers to motivate and will fight if needed.
Birtukan Mideksa - a former political prisoner who suffered in the hands of the TPLF - is now overseeing
#Ethiopia
's first parliamentary election since PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
took office in 2018 on a pledge to end decades of authoritarian rule.
#Ethiopia
: Today, 21 trucks carrying food items from the UN’s WFP have started transporting humanitarian assistance to
#Tigray
. Govt of Ethiopia “reaffirms its commitment to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the full delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.”
Breaking:
#Ethiopian
Federal Army seizes strategic cities and towns in the northern region of
#Tigray
. The loss of Shire, for example, is a significant blow to the TPLF rebels.
At Lake Afdera in the
#Afar
region of
#Ethiopia
. The region is the main source of salt - a lucrative industry and Afar people believe that the Tigrayan rebels are fighting to take over their land and resources.
Salt and natural resources are important in this conflict.
One of the unintended consequences of the conflict between
#Ethiopian
Govt and TPLF rebels is that it brought most ethnic groups closer. Look, the Afar flag is flying in Woldia, Amhara Region. Addis Mayor
@AdanechAbiebie
visited
#Somali
State to help drought victims.
And more…
Huge pro-Government rally today in
#Ethiopia
’s capital Addis. 100s of 1000s of people came out to condemn
#Tigray
rebels or ‘Terrorists’, to denounce the US & Europe for supporting anti-Govt group to ‘destabilise’ the country. They are also celebrating the 2nd filling of the Dam.
Ethiopian Forces led by Prime Minister
@AbiyAhmedAli
, who has headed to the front again, have captured the mountain chains of Zobel; strategic towns of Arjo, Fokisa, Boren towns and cut through the main Woldia - Mekelle highway. 1/2
Many black Brits feel deeply uncomfortable with Comic Relief's poverty porn. It’s my job to represent their views however uncomfortable. They want their children to have rounded views about Africa and these types of campaign woefully fail to do that.
We are now editing our second story from
#Ethiopia
’s Tigray Region, which will air tomorrow on
@Channel4News
. This time we report alleged massacres, hear from victims’ relatives and show the faces and people behind the numbers.
Today is my birthday- actually my fake birthday. Like most
#Somalis
of my age, I don’t know the month & year I was born. The UK Home Office forced me to make up a date of birth when I was applying asylum. Many Somalis chose January 1st cos it’s easy to remember, I didn’t.
Filming newest members of Fano training in Kombolcha, northern
#Ethiopia
.
Fano,
#Amhara

this evening.
The

survived an assassination attempt two years ago.

in an hour and will share it when it’s online.
Editing a story about
#Ethiopia
’s Dam.
It’s one of the issues that unites
#Ethiopians
, who regard the Dam as:
A national pride
A light of hope
A symbol of strength
Meles Zenawi, former
#TPLF
leader &
#Ethiopian
Prime Minister, died 10 years ago. TPLF supporters revere him as a hero. However, for many communities across Ethiopia and the Horn of
#Africa
region, Meles was a brutal and murderous leader - many of his victims are alive today.
@PowerUSAID
Democracy:
#Ethiopia
had an election in June (there are questions about the integrity of the election). But it seems most Ethiopians prefer PM
@AbiyAhmedAli
as a leader - they don’t want the return of the TPLF.
Is democracy about the will of the people or the will of the US? 2/
A vital supply route and strategic junction in Kombolcha. The TPLF rebel group is fighting very hard to capture it. The
#Ethiopian
Govt is determined not to lose it. Whoever is in control here would no doubt feel that they have the upper hand in this year-long conflict.
@PowerUSAID
@AbiyAhmedAli
Human Rights: Western countries talk about human rights. But the TPLF led Ethiopia for almost 30 years and committed heinous crimes against other communities.
The west often rewarded Meles.
Aren’t the victims of TPLF humans?
Why be selective when it comes to human rights? 4/
@AbiyAhmedAli
It’s well-documented that during the 27-year TPLF-rule, especially under Meles, the regime committed atrocities including rape, massacres and using hunger as a weapon across
#Ethiopia
and in neighbouring countries. 4/
In
#Somalia
, nicknamed as the butcher of Mogadishu, Gen Gabre and his TPLF soldiers killed tens of thousand of civilians. Just Google Gabre + Somalia. His forces regularly bombed civilian areas and used white phosphorous. I remember the murder of 400+ Somalis in a single day. 6/
Looking at the diverse faces of PM Abiy’s guards yesterday, you realise
#Ethiopia
is a land of many different ethnic groups.
But some want to dominate others and for 27 years, the TPLF from Tigray, ran this country as their playground.
Will
@AbiyAhmedAli
change that?
TPLF and other rebels fought a bloody war to bring down the Derg Regime. Led by Meles, they had 27-long-years to create strong institutions - that would have protected citizens and themselves.
Instead, Meles and his accomplices run Ethiopia and the Horn like a mafia state. 2/
Being a
#Somali
journalist:
Every time I do a Somali-related story highlighting wrong doings, those who are unhappy complain to my clan elders.
I receive so many calls or have to appear in front of my clan elders to explain my position. 1/
Tonight, we have another story from
#Ethiopia
; ethnic conflicts. I travelled to Guraferda in the Southern Region, where indigenous communities are forcing others like
#Amharas
to leave the area or face death. Watch
@Channel4News
at 7pm.
Later, the TPLF turned on comrades - those who fought alongside during the struggle - going to war against
#Eritrea
and invading
#Somalia
. Meles also convinced the west & the AU that Eritrea was a rogue state; punishing a whole nation - ordinary Eritreans suffered as a result. 5/
In the past few months, I visited 7/10 regions of
#Ethiopia
and did stories and I can say that (except Tigray and parts of Oromia) most people are living in peace.
TPLF's objective was to create fear in people's minds and to subjugate whole communities - rule by fear.
I witnessed such events in Qabridahar, Jigjiga, Harar, Diredawa. I’ve also heard similar stories were common elsewhere in the country. 4/
Twenty years ago today, I arrived in London as a 20-year-old man seeking a better life after going through unimaginable suffering in childhood in
#Somalia
. Was armed with hope & determination to do well in life. I’ve succeeded & exceeded expectations.
Life is good
#LondonIsGreat
I wrote this article about
#Somalia
four years ago but it applies to
#Ethiopia
today. Some of 'The Nairobi Mafia' members, I am told, believe
#Africans
are not intelligent - cannot run their own affairs and - therefore must be saved.
Witnesses accuse
#Tigray
fighters of killings.
One man said he counted 55 corpses as he escaped from his town in northern
#Ethiopia
, stepping over bodies scattered in the streets. Others claimed Tigray forces went door-to-door killing men and teenage boys.
The UN says TPLF rebels looted 12 fuel tankers with 570,000 liters of fuel. It was for WFP operations to deliver food to Tigrayans starving.
The
@WFP
boss, in a tweet, described the actions of TPLF rebels as ‘outrageous and disgraceful’ and ‘demand return of this fuel NOW’.
On the night the Ethiopian troops captured the Tigray capital Mekelle, I was in Addis Ababa and checking reactions on social media, people were posting pictures of them celebrating. Places like Afar, Amhara, Oromia, Somali Region, Nairobi, Dadaab, Djibouti, Europe & America... 8/
