Another oldie from animation lectures. The discussion was about posing & how you can push your reference.

used live models then exaggerated the areas he felt could be more dynamic. Here is one of the examples I used (click to see draw-overs from talk):
Craziness of me acting ref for GMAN. Took several times on different days to feel out the right emotions/facial changes. *TIP: I always try to memorize the lines to help secure the flow. He is an interesting char.

First hired by Disney studios in 1975, Ron Husband worked on over 18 animated features. He retired from the company in 2013. Another giant piece of inspiration while trying to get in the door
...We looked at tons of fighting reference to ensure we were hitting proper postures & believable punches/kicks. You can take many liberties in animation but having it grounded from a real place (weight/timing) gives you the illusion of life.
the result of my friend & mentor James Baxter's two hour live animation demonstration at the Edinburgh Move Summit. The suggestion from the audience was for the bear to find a teddy bear.
...just something fun for

.I had to channel my cousin on this one. Strong like her dad and never backed down when we were kids. (Probably still doesn't)

New Tenacious D music video "Video Games" released today.
Directed by
@adampaloian
(The Cuphead Show!) and
@OneyPlays
Co-director and animation director
@OlovBurman
CG supervisor: Jack Gatto
Producer: Pinreel Inc. (Paloian's new prodco)
Its always fun to start a new char. I create model sheets to help guide my decisions. GMAN was hard because his expressions are subtle. One trick is to find the extremes (even if I may never hit those poses). Its better to push farther then pull back if needed
#HalfLifeAlyx
Subtle acting in animation is very VERY hard. Keeping the drawings alive while controlling shapes/volumes and still getting the emotion across..!!. Great example by
@mxdelalande
Maxime Delalande. Thanks for allowing me to share your work. No short cuts in animation.
Here's a pretty cool discovery I made today! In order to test if they can blend CG with 2D animation for Disney's Treasure Planet with Long John Silver, they took some Captain Hook animation and replaced his right arm with Silver's CG cyber arm. This is the old meets the new!
Honored to call this guy my friend. BJ (Blue Sky Animator) & I have chopped it up about animation & story for years. He even represented my film in NYC. I have NO DOUBT his skills will be sought after by MANY places. Here is a sample of how he gets down:
Watching ‘The Incredibles’ you realize how solid the the story telling is. The structure, character development, & rhythm of the scenes just makes you feel good. You are on a journey with the chars & not on a guided tour. Still one of the best animated films ever made.
#animation
... I love good hand poses. I see a lot of FPS games where the chars look like they have really bad arthritis... Research helps you find good ways to pose hands. Even take your own photos to find the appeal.. LESS IS MORE!
Animation by Kristof Serrand . Just great work... SOLID!
Do you want to break into the industry? Just put your head down & focus on being the best animator you can be. This work always reminds me I still have a long way to go and so much more to learn.

walking out of the theatre I immediately called Anim Director Alan Hawkins to say congrats on a great achievement. The ENTIRE TEAM came with the business. The entire family had a good time. You are cheating yourself if u don't see it on the big screen
A moving piece of art that’s all I can say! Definitely an animated film that historians will talk about IMO. The amount of craftsmanship is mind blowing.

Malcolm Angell committed suicide because of working conditions at a DAMN ANIMATION studio!!!!?? With so many artists & animators on SM why hasn't this been passed around more??!! I completely missed this news but I am REALLY disturbed by this. REALLY DISTURBED. I feel sick
Toxic Labor Practices At Technicolor's Mill Film Led A VFX Worker To Suicide, Co-Workers Allege
80-hour workweeks, humiliation by bosses, and a “deeply disturbing” contract are among the factors that some say drove one vfx worker to suicide.
Definitely one of my favorite animated characters by legend Sergio Pablos
@TheSPAStudios
. Clean posing, clear expressions, & interesting beats in the thought changes. This is the kind of shot you show when people ask "...can you do the animation cheaper...?" uhmm... NO! )
#SpiderVerse
SO.... I walked out of the movie feeling so many good feelings. MUCH MUCH RESPECT to the people that created this film. It literally pulled on every emotion I have ... It made me fall in love with the craft of animation all over again

This is when he was circling the adult Simba upon his return. The drawings are just solid...
"PET" concept by my friend
@PatrickTOsborne
A small group of us got to work on this while at Disney. I remember Patrick doing small tests trying to build out an alternative method of rendering WITHOUT actually rendering. I had fun helping. (sorry music not included)
When I started in film I was really pushed to take "ME" out of me work. What they wanted to remove was how & where I grew up. The mannerisms of NJ, Philly, Chester were/are engrained in my soul. My short allowed me to be "ME" when animating. Its what you feel in this walk
Grateful & excited to be a new member of
@TheAcademy
... joining so many talented people that I have looked up to for decades. Pretty crazy! Thank you for all of the support.
Just a small bit of my friend & mentor's work
@BruceAlmighteee
The range with what he can animate has ALWAYS been inspiring. Not sure I would still be animating if it were not for him. Much respect and love for the big homie!
So you voted for someone who is backed by racists... This shows what you value. Yes I will call you what you are. Your values endanger my family and those who look like me. The country made me look at the world through my color. Despite this fact, we have overcome so much..
Susanoo battles the Fire God in The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon (1963), dir. Yūgo Serikawa, Toei Doga
This visually stunning film broke new ground for Japanese animation -- and went on to influence everything from Samurai Jack to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

... haha. Just figure out the character & make it happen. This also ties into my one of my old talks I used to give: “Animation Goes Beyond Race”
I uploaded the 1st HOUR of "...𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝...", my 3 HOUR lecture about taking a shot from start to finish. Created some yrs ago as an affordable option to learn animation. LINK ( )

rough animation test: I had fun doing this because I never really tried to animated someone talking through their teeth in anger. Some interesting challenges with trying to retain graphic shapes in the mouth, but fun it was a fun WIP

You know..
@blueskystudios
definitely added to my drive of pursuing a career in this field. Thank you BLUE SKY for adding another perspective & building on to the history of animation. You have inspired & groomed some of the BEST animators in this industry.

A clip from “Bink & Gollie: Two for One” by Kate DiCamillo & Alison McGhee illustrated by animation great Tony Fucile. I believe Tony animated this as well. His children’s book illustrations are an animators dream... a key figure at Pixar & one of the best char designers around
