This study highlights the importance of selecting relevant intestinal regions for studies of diseases with region-specific dysbiosis, and the results warrant further investigation into alternative approaches to fecal microbiota transplantation in microbiome studies.

Various aspects of bacterial metabolism were also generally SI enriched, including simple carbohydrate degradation, lipid fermentation, and cross-feeding, while butyrate production was colon-enriched.

In line with previous reports, small intestine (SI) - enriched bacteria were largely aerotolerant or facultative anaerobes, while colon- enriched bacteria were obligate anaerobes. Surprisingly, the genus Akkermansia was enriched in the SI lumen relative to the colon lumen.

Leveraging luminal and mucosal samples meticulously collected and sequenced from the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, proximal colon, and distal colon, we highlight region - specific bacteria and metabolic functions robust across 3 cohorts of SPF mice.

Dr. Jesús Araujo and Dr. Jonathan Jacobs’ new study investigates air pollution’s impact on colitis and cardiovascular health. While pollution doesn’t exacerbate colitis in their models, it may influence cardiovascular risk through gut bacteria. Read more: https://t.co/sYkQu8J4NS
