Our future work will use longitudinal data and higher-resolution microbiome sequencing to uncover more about the relationship between the oral microbiome and mental health, especially in people with a history of adversity exposure. (7/7).

All in all, our results suggest that cortisol may regulate oral microbiome richness, but that a history of caregiving adversity weakens that relationship. Adversity also has direct associations with the oral microbiome independently of cortisol. (6/7).

The kids with adversity exposure also had slightly lower levels of some cortisol-sensitive bacteria, and slightly higher levels of certain potentially harmful bacteria. However, only one adversity-related bacteria type was significantly associated with mental health. (5/7).

For example, for kids without adversity exposure, higher cortisol was linked to lower richness (i.e., fewer different types of bacteria), but this link was weakened in kids with adversity exposure. (4/7).

We wanted to explore whether differences in the oral microbiome (the microorganisms that live in the mouth) might link adversity to health. We found small but significant associations between oral microbiome traits and caregiving adversity (3/7).

Kids with a history of caregiving-related adversity (e.g., child maltreatment) are at higher risk for physical, oral, and mental health problems. Finding mechanisms that link these adversities to health is important for developing treatments to reduce that risk. (2/7).

Excited to share new work from the @BABLab_UCLA and the Mind, Brain, Body team finding weakened links between cortisol and the oral microbiome, as well as altered bacterial abundance, in kids exposed to early caregiving-related adversity. (1/7).
