I don't really buy the "you had to be there," argument as such because you can still appreciate the impact a band has/had by having a geater understanding of what came before, the zeitgeist of the time, what came after, and music in general. Plus live they were untouchable.

Loads of others too were like bombs going off either in music as a whole (Elvis) or in their respective scenes. And some broke out of their scenes - Fugazi definitely crossed over.

Which you have. But they did it first. Same with, and to a far greater extent, The Beatles. Most of us heard everything they did a million times before listening to them but they did it all first and with no map to follow. Pure invention and creativity, new way of thinking.

I feel like this is because if you come to Fugazi later and have heard all the watered down versions over the years, the actual enormity of what they were doing, the newness and the intrigue and the way they gave hardcore a new dimension feels very "heard it all before."
Never really liked Fugazi. Way too tame. When I first heard the music I was so confused like, oh people like this because it’s watered down versions of all the noise rock, post-hardcore, and other Dischord bands from the time. Feels proto-Turnstile (the newer albums) in that way.
