So pumped to announce that I will be starting my lab at UCSF, at the sunny Mission Bay campus, doors opening in April 2023! We will be studying the design principles that allow mammalian innate immune systems to evolve robustly to deal with the problem of rapidly evolving viruses.

Thanks to my many fantastic trainees – including @SDelBanco, @candiceleilani, @afeez_sodeinde, @caro_line_, @rechelgeiger, @BougiePhD, and Elise Adamson – for your scientific help, for molding me into a better mentor, and for teaching me the joy of trainees spreading their wings.

By characterizing the evolutionary routes that innate immune proteins can take towards successful defense, and how viruses counter-evolve to escape, we will determine the relative robustness of their evolutionary landscapes and find out how hosts biochemically “see” viruses.

How DO innate immune proteins, which unlike Abs/TCRs are invariant within a particular host, cope with viruses’ amazing ability to mutate and escape defenses? What strategies can help the host level this unfair evolutionary playing field? We aim to find out!.

On top of all the other reasons that today’s overturn of Roe v. Wade is incredibly disheartening, let me add an additional factor I didn’t know of until my pregnancy: the physical toll of carrying to term, regardless of what happens after, can be IMMENSE.
