This morning I signed a contract with
@politybooks
to write a new book on Taiwan and cross-Strait relations in a world of authoritarian revanchism. I expect the book to be published sometime in 2025. Very excited to embark on this new project!
A true symbol of
#Taiwan
, female boxer Lin Yu-ting overcame adversity, a disinformation campaign and sexism by securing gold at the Olympics. The road is never an easy one for the people of Taiwan, but time and again, against all odds, they prevail. 台灣加油!
One photo to demonstrate the level of absurdity involved in the IOC’s rule against displays of statehood for Taiwan. This is not the ROC flag, just a towel. Shameful.
It seems there is no bottom to the lows which
@DrTedros
and the
@WHO
can sink. Tedros alleged yesterday that
#Taiwan
— not "Taipei and environs" — has orchestrated a "racist" campaign against him for the past three months. Because he is black.
China's MFA, PLA announced today they no longer recognize the (tacit) median line in the Taiwan Strait. This constitutes dangerous escalation and markedly increases risks of accident.
Even this was confiscated by security at the Paris Olympics! That’s what happens when you allow an authoritarian power to set the rules and export its censorship. The IOC might as well ban the color green altogether.
Want to know why security at the Paris Olympics knew which symbols of Taiwan needed to be targeted and removed? Ask this Chinese woman (left), who was seen directing them. Utterly shameful.
I am, once again, astounded by the resilience of the people of
#Taiwan
. Today’s 7.2 temblor - the strongest in 25 years - and 100+ aftershocks (including two above 6 in intensity) caused 9 deaths and about 900 injured. Given its strength, it could have been a lot worse.
This evening (5/24) outside
#Taiwan

In the latest round of attempts by
#China
to punish
#Taiwan
, Beijing has announced it will cancel all imports of Taiwanese pineapple from March 1. I don't know about you, but I'm suddenly craving Taiwanese pineapple.
People went to work, found alternatives to get to work if transportation was disrupted; children went to school; restaurants were full. Rescue workers promptly deployed to the hardest-hit areas. Everywhere, we saw fortitude, pragmatism, and no panic.
As
@WHO
head
@DrTedros
accuses
#Taiwan
of orchestrating a "racist campaign" against him and "black communities," this report shows that Taiwan has been providing medical assistance in his home country, Ethiopia, since 2012.
It's not about whether we should start a Cold War with China; we ARE in a Cold War with China, whose outcome will determine the very future of the international system. It will decide whether we, as members of the community of nations, can countenance the existence of [...]
Autocratic leaders tend to be stiff, humorless, and paranoid about any potential slight. Contrast this with
#Taiwan
President
@iingwen
, who leads one of the most vibrant democracies in Asia. (Try imagining Xi Jinping in such a scene!)
Among small and medium powers, the
#CzechRepublic
is bravely leading the way and showing the rest of the world that it is possible to stand up to
#China
. It is in stark contrast with the moral cowardice that many more powerful countries have displayed.
This is my 5th general election in
#Taiwan
. I remain in awe of the vibrancy of the campaigning and the people’s attachment to their democracy. Every time, this underscores how Taiwan/
#ROC
and the authoritarian
#PRC
are simply incompatible systems. What an honor to be here!
Outside
#Taiwan
’s Legislative Yuan at 8pm May 21 as the KMT and TPP attempt to pass various amendments that would give the LY greater powers at the expense of the Executive branch. Many procedural issues & constitutional changes that arguably should be put to referenda.
Beijing is ostensibly retaliating against a possible visit to
#Taiwan
by U.S. House Speaker
#Pelosi
by, among other things, suspending the import of several Taiwanese food products -- including those by popular brands #乖乖 and #義美. I did my part and went to buy...some snacks.
When pro-Beijing gangsters tried to attack members of the Sunflower Movement on April 1, 2014, Taipei police, even under the KMT, did the right thing and protected unarmed citizens. That's the difference between
#Taiwan
and
#hongkong
Poor Dr. Tedros is playing the victim card to hide the fact that (a) his organization has, for all intents and purposes, been coopted by the
#CCP
; and (b) that, under his watch, the WHO has failed to fulfill its mandate. How convenient to blame
#Taiwan
. The WHO needs a revamp.
#Taiwan
donates 500,000 protective masks to
#Canada
: 400,000 for the central government, and 100,000 for three provinces severely affected by
#COVID19
. So far, Taiwan has donated a total of 18 million masks to 40 countries worldwide.
Oh,
@DrTedros
and
@WHO
: you might want to tune in at 11AM, when
#Taiwan
's Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB) reveals that a *PRC Internet army* was behind the "racist campaign" you allege was launched against you and black people in general.
A young Taiwanese student in the UK responds to
@DrTedros
' baseless accusations of a "racist" campaign orchestrated by
#Taiwan
. The young lady keeps the moral high ground, which he certainly did not.
#China
's ambassador in
#Australia
has warned that demands for a probe into the spread of
#COVID19
could lead to a consumer boycott of Aussie wine or trips Down Under.
Nice graph by
#Taiwan
's CNA showing the different zones used during the 1995-96 Taiwan Strait Missile Crisis (grey) and the August 4-7 live-fire exercises (pink) announced 16 minutes after Speaker
#Pelosi
landed in Taipei on August 2.
Tell me this, then, Mr. Tedros: During
#SARS
in 2003, when the
@WHO
was AGAIN failing to work with
#Taiwan
and the Taiwanese people were understandably upset, were they being "racist" towards your predecessor, Margaret Chan, because she is Asian? Give me a break.

The CCP showed off its might with a display of ICBMs in Beijing; more importantly, it showed its weakness when HK police felt it necessary to shoot a 17-year-old protester in the chest with a real bullet.
All right,
@TwitterSupport
. How much longer will it take before you take action against an account that constantly threatens violence and war against a peaceful democracy, who threatens to kill the people that I love (including myself, as I live in Taiwan)?
The criticism he has faced was over Taiwan's being excluded from the
@WHO
; and over the WHO's refusal to take into account the intelligence Taiwanese health officials had sent to his organization in the early phases of the outbreak re: human-to-human transmission of
#COVID19
.
Far too often I hear the argument that greater U.S. support for/engagement with
#Taiwan
is the result of Trump fueling an "anti-China" sentiment. What about engaging Taiwan, a successful democracy and economy, in its own right rather than as a subset of U.S.-PRC relations?
Chinese TOURISTS entered campus at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, southern
#Taiwan
, and tore down artwork supporting
#HK
from wall. Students vow to retaliate by turning entire tunnel into a democracy wall.
The reason why
#Taiwan
is a natural ally of countries in Eastern Europe, is that all know what it's like to live under the shadow of authoritarianism. Living here shapes one's take on life, what w/ the perpetual threat. The West has forgotten, if it ever knew, what that's like.
ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE "LIKELY TO IRE" OR "ANGER" CHINA! BEIJING ALREADY DOES A GOOD JOB EXPRESSING ITS ANGER AT PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE. WE DON'T NEED INT'L MEDIA REINFORCING ITS SILLY PROPAGANDA. THINK, HEADLINE WRITERS. THINK!
Read the placard in (simplified) Chinese. That protester isn’t protesting
#Taiwan
president
@iingwen
; rather, he is sending his, uh, “greetings” to Xi’s mother.
Well Mr. Wang #王志安, we won’t be seeing your face in
#Taiwan
for the next five years. In-country on the wrong visa, and mocking people with a physical disability to boot, showing yet again why Taiwan and the
#PRC
are worlds apart.
Former failed KMT presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu describes today's recall of Han Kuo-yu as "darkest day" in Taiwan's democracy. I guess the second-darkest day was when her own party ditched her before the 2016 elections.
The Chinese student who destroyed a Lennon Wall at National Taiwan University is accompanied by police to the airport this morning. The student is banned from entering
#Taiwan
for the next 5 years.
“Among the evidence recovered ... were notes written in Chinese that Chou left in his car showing he did not believe Taiwan should be an independent state from China.”
Analysts within the "abandon Taiwan" camp have a poor understanding of history, are utterly naive about the nature of the
#CCP
, and constantly deny agency to
#Taiwan
's 23.5 million people. My latest for
@MLInstitute
Like several others in recent days, I've been blocked by
@icao
for daring to mention that
#Taiwan
ought to be able to participate. As the host country of ICAO (headquartered in Montreal), can Canada issue a complaint to the organization?
@CanadaONU
@CanadaFP
Today's recall of Kaohsiung mayor Han Kuo-yu should not be described as a "victory." It was, instead, a necessary corrective using extraordinary democratic measures, necessary because democracy was under threat.
Journalists & editors, PLEASE get it right: Countries do not have a "one China" PRINCIPLE -- that's Beijing's formulation. They have a "one China" POLICY. Moreover, they do not AGREE that Taiwan is part of China; most merely "acknowledge" or "take note of" Beijing's contention.
His accusations remind me of similar claims by
@ICAO
earlier this year of a supposedly
#Taiwan
-led campaign to attack the organization (Tedros even claims that Taiwan's MOFA knew and did nothing).
We have reached a point where I’d argue that if reputable Western media are to give a platform to
#CCP
officials, then falsehoods should be flagged. The claim that the U.S. abides by the “one China” principle is not a matter of opinion - it’s a lie.
William Lai of the DPP wins
#Taiwan
’s 2024 presidential election. This is the first time since the country’s democratization that a party gets a 3rd consecutive mandate; also the 1st time a former premier becomes president, and 1st time a candidate w/ an English name wins.
I am celebrating today the 17th anniversary of my arrival in
#Taiwan
, where I immediately fell in love with the land and its people. Needless to say, it's been a transformative experience. I look forward to many more years here. (Photo: Theerasak Saksritawee)
"Pacifying Taiwan would be an immense challenge for the PLA, and the Taiwanese can make that threat all the more formidable by receiving proper training, being given access to weapons and by preparing the population to ... [wage] asymmetrical resistance."
Canadian PM
@JustinTrudeau
yesterday in Parliament finally reaffirmed
#Canada
's support for meaningful participation of
#Taiwan
in multilateral fora and observer status at
@WHO
's annual World Health Assembly. (Quick,
@ICAO
: you must now block Trudeau's Twitter account!)
1/5 This is my fourth presidential election in
#Taiwan
and it is, by far, the worst. Nobody is talking policy because one side doesn't have a policy and doesn't want the rest of us to be discussing that subject. Instead, the environment is awash in disinformation.
Can't add much to what's already been said about today's U.S. presidential, er, "debate." One thing I'll say, though: damn we're lucky to have
@iingwen
as president here in
#Taiwan
. In some corners of the world, democracy is still very much alive and kicking.
If there's any silver lining to
#COVID19
it's that at long last, the entire world now realizes what it feels like to be
#Taiwan
, having to deal with a passive-aggressive
#China
. Welcome to our neck of the woods, world!
Had to screen-grab this from someone else's computer as
@ICAO
has blocked me; this absurd message was posted on the ICAO Twitter page about 1 hour ago. I guess our queries about why
#Taiwan
is being denied the info it needs from ICAO were not "genuine."
The Inaugural
#Taiwan
Beer is now on sale at your local convenience store. A special brew to commemorate the 15th presidential and vice presidential term. Cheers!
@UN_Women
All people should be able to choose freely whether to enter a partnership with an annexationist authoritarian regime. Don't make that decision for Taiwan's 23 million people, UN.
Adding insult to injury:
#China
's autocrat in chief, Xi Jinping, invited by
@WHO
head
@DrTedros
to give opening remarks at
#WHA
... from which, despite calls by a concert of democracies, democratic
#Taiwan
remains excluded.
LinkedIn account of Qining Guang, comms officer at
@ICAO
, has vanished after her role was exposed. Prior to joining ICAO, she worked at Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in Beijing, like ICAO head
@icaoFangLIU
. Before that, at the All-China Journalists Association.
Due to
#Taiwan
’s isolation, former president Lee Teng-hui #李登輝 has not received the international recognition that is his due. He belongs in the pantheon with Václav Havel and Nelson Mandela. My obit for
@UoNARI_Taiwan
An interesting graph by
#Taiwan
's Central News Agency showing how international developments (most of them pertaining to Taiwan) have often prompted
#PLA
intrusions into Taiwan's southwestern
#ADIZ
.
We're all trying to figure out how best to deal w/ China. However, the notion that we're simply facing a normal competitor is, in my view, a naive one: normal competitors do not run concentration camps.
This is absurd. Think of the countless people in Taiwan who would die as a result of your despotic ambitions, of the war of conquest you constantly threaten.
Today we paid our respects and said our final goodbye to former Japanese PM
@AbeShinzo
at the
#Japan
-
#Taiwan
Exchange Association 日本台灣交流協會. The messages left by visitors from all walks of life were very moving.
No sooner had reports emerged that former Japanese PM
@AbeShinzo
been shot than Chinese cyber minions passing themselves off as Taiwanese began leaving posts on Japanese media celebrating the attempted assassination. Ultranationalist Chinese cannot countenance JPE-TW friendship.
"There's no intent on my part to antagonize China" by visiting
#Taiwan
, says
@MPRandyHoback
. EVERYTHING antagonizes
#China
, Mr. Hoback. We can't let Beijing dictate our engagement w/ other democracies. Come visit. We'll treat you well. The sky won't fall.
It's always been hostile to begin with. The idea of "peaceful" unification was mere propaganda in the face of a democracy that has next to no interest in being taken over by the PRC. The pretense is now gone. The aim is annexation, pure and simple.
