‘Because X is virtuous’ is a non-answer to ‘Why is X good?’.

So what I take Aristotle to be doing in NE is providing something like a model for what you’ll look like if you take your rational nature seriously. You’ll behave in a certain way, ie be virtuous. But are the virtues explanatory? I don’t think so.

This is my non-specialist take, fwiw.

The simple version of virtue ethics is that you enumerate character traits you ought to have, and that’s what ethics is. But this leaves out the *why* of it all: we’re rational creatures and thus how we ought to behave given that rational nature.

I’ve repeated the idea that virtue ethics is a distinct school of ethics apart from consequentialism and deontology, but increasingly I think this is 1) a bad framing 2) a bad way to read Aristotle and related writers.
