Come and visit our posters at #ESOVE! Pepijn Helleman shares our work on the population genetics of mosquitoes on islands (S01-P09), and I’ll discuss what tens of new mosquito mitogenomes reveal about the discriminative power of mitochondrial genes (S1-P19).

This underscores again the importance of a well-studied taxonomic backbone for understanding and predicting public health risks. Future studies are essential to determine the distribution of this species across the islands and to identify its local host preferences. (5/6)

There is even uncertainty about whether this species is mammophilic (mammal-biting) or herpetophilic (reptile-biting). (4/6)

Additionally, the sand flies referred to as ‘M. trinidadensis’ in the literature are likely an aggregation of multiple species under the same name. Therefore, we are uncertain if the Caribbean type can actually function as a vector for Leishmania. (3/6)

In our article, we detail the accidental discovery of Micropygomyia trinidadensis. While some literature suggests that this species could be a potential vector for Leishmania, there have been no recorded cases of sand fly-related illnesses in humans or animals on the island (2/6)

I've observed these 'tumors' in all treatments of my experiment, suggesting it's unrelated. While I've seen them in wild larvae before, I can't recall the species and can't find them in my collection. Any suggestions or similar experiences? #Entomology #mosquitoresearch

Hey mosquito researchers! I need some help. About 25% of my Culex pipiens larvae are developing "tumors" around their anal papillae. They mold into pupae and swim a bit wobbly, but otherwise seem normal. Has anyone encountered this before? Any insights on the cause? #entomology
