Just to share a different perspective than some, if paper tournaments don’t come back after the pandemic is over, I’ll likely quit playing the game competitively.
I don’t believe I have ever felt so happy waiting at an airport after losing a match of Magic. They say second place is the worst, but right now it doesn’t feel that far away from first... 1/4
My fellow draft addicts, it's not about us facing more rares, we'll adjust to that, it's about people not getting to draft as much (or at all) because of higher prices.
I hate Ramp, so for Mythic Championship V, I submitted à control deck ! It generates card advantage with Circuitous Route and kills with Field of the dead.
I see a weird cognitive dissonance in many Magic players (and, frankly, people in other areas) between 1) recognizing someone as an expert, even praising their understanding of a topic and 2) not defaulting to trusting this person's opinion when a disagreement arises. 1/15
In addition to the people I thanked in the moment, I want to dedicate my win to chat and especially WindsorAirlift aka
@realBarnacle
, the best moderator on Twitch.

If there's one tournament where I didn't expect such a strong start, it's this one... Magic is weird sometimes.
Now comes the hard part: staying vigilant to not fall off on day 2 like undefeated people often do!
The art pictures my exact face when I received Goblin Ringleader as a preview card.
But I guess I should have been more specific than "I like value"... ;)
Thanks
@wizards_magic
for the

Some thoughts after a good night of sleep
First off, congrats
@SethManfield
on winning it all,
@MrChecklistcard
on winning with vegan sandwiches and everyone in the top8 or close for being great at Magic.
I see many people saying Magic has no distinctive IP like it's just a basic, obvious truth, but it's... not? Sure, it doesn't have one big cultural product, like a movie, a series or a book, and sure it has evolved a lot over the years... 1/3
@gotpumbaa
Moi j'en ai marre des abrutis de tous âges qui veulent que tout le monde ait les mêmes refs qu'eux et pensent de surcroît que la culture, quelle qu'elle soit, définit seule la valeur d'une personne.
Haters may hate, but Sultai is playable again !
(15th sideboard card is the 4th Extinction event)
Basically, you interact with anything you want in the 75, and get to play arguably the two most powerful cards in Standard : Uro and Nissa.
Alas, I didn't, and since the mistake was only caught after the cascade trigger and a draw step, the judge ruled that we couldn't go back.
Having gained such a massive, unfair advantage from my untapped Marsh, I felt like the best way to fix the game state was to concede.
Let's play a little game! The clear best card in Standard is Fable of the Mirror-Breaker. What's my pick for the 2nd best?
One week from now, after decklist submission for the European RC, I'll tweet my deck with the answer :)
I got a sweet free preview from
@wizards_magic
for Innistrad - Crimson Vow! We explored some of the options on stream earlier, but what do you think is the best way to use this little dude?
13th place
#PTPhyrexia
. Gave away a couple games over the tournament, so this feels a little like a missed opportunity, but still a satisfying finish for the return of paper PTs!
If you never expect anything, any result comes as a good surprise and you never feel like you « have to do more ». That’s something I learnt in Warsaw two years ago and that has followed me ever since. I hope I can preserve this mindset as long as I’ll be competing. 4/4
After reading a bunch of content on Kaldheim Sealed, I couldn't resist adding to it.
Disclaimer : as usual, it's a bit long, but there are pictures in the end ^^
We do NOT know the formats for Worlds. I would hate it if there was no draft involved, but that « info » comes from a dubious article that doesn’t provide a source for it and also claims the shuffler is rigged. Can we advocate for more draft without spreading rumors ?
What UB detractors dislike is that Magic's multiverse is expanding in a non-cohesive way: that new worlds and characters are being shoved into it for artificial growth. That's a perfectly valid concern. 3/3
You guys defending play boosters as the logical move "because draft boosters don't sell" aren't ready for the new pristine boosters in 2025 and their merge with play boosters into core boosters the year after.
About to board on the most important flight of my life. If I make it to LA, I’m already locked for the 2020 MPL !
(Then I have to win the tournament, of course.)
Rewatching some of the draft coverage, I’m baffled that they apply 17lands data to what is essentially not the same format.
Also, where are these grades coming from??
Having the players talk more about their decks/how they approach the format would have led to better content imo.
I don't think I've ever been as tilted as in this limited format. Every two days I'm about to start a Twitter thread about everything that's wrong with it, maybe I'll get to it when the frustration level gets high enough.
That reminds me of a Twitter thread I can't find again describing how a cascade of small decisions that alienate a player base for short-term profit can, in time, cause a game's sudden downfall. For Magic, we may not see the effects yet, but I'm more and more worried.
Great tournament to play and watch
@NEOChamps
. A bit sad, obviously, to not have made it to the end (and I hate Citystalker Connoisser right now...) but it made sense my deck would be outclassed at some point and a third Worlds invite was the big price anyway!
I might tweet stuff about autism in the future, I feel like it's widely misunderstood even by Magic players (which is ironic because, as a potential special interest, it's bound to attract some of us) and often talked about without naming it (I've done it a lot myself).
I want to thank all my opponents who gave me (and you) all these amazing games, and of course everyone who supported me. Special congratulations to
@JavierDmagic
for making Gruul look convincing - an achievement in itself - but I still think something from Golos needs to go. 3/4
Another important thing I was reminded of: noone can play perfectly. The game's just too hard. You aim at perfection, but sometimes you stumble, even badly in front of 1000s of people, and that's ok. Fuck those who'll take it as a sign you don't belong, and keep grinding.
Some thoughts :
- PVDDR and Ondrej Strasky have the best deck of the tournament ;
- other Temur lists are lacking Opts ;
- despite upgrading the usual build, monored players are in for a rough week-end, especially because contrary to popular belief, the Temur m-u isn’t very good.
It's the moment you've all been waiting for!

Hey
@LegacyEUTour
! Not sure if you already have plans regarding coverage of LMS Paris in September, but if you're looking for commentators for the Modern main event, my DMs are open!
I have done plenty of French coverage in the past years and am fluent in English too.
After a night of grinding the ladder from Platinum to

Mythic, I finally submitted my decklist for Worlds... Last time I did something similar was with Bant Golos before my best finish of 2019.
A good omen ?
Props to both teams 🤝on their incredible performances today! Having played Magic for a while, but not as much as some, I'm in this strange position of feeling neither like a true MtG boomer, nor like a zoomer; yet it's inspiring to see the young(er) guys crushing it that hard.
I know some are disappointed that the first draft open was scheduled on the Set Championship week-end… but remember that being good at draft and good at Magic are two completely different things!
... but I wouldn't have had such a big crush on the game as a kid if it was "just a set of rules". The multiverse pulled me in. Many different worlds with their own identities =/= no identity overall, there are (quite literally) infinite ways to build a cohesive multiverse. 2/3
I often get asked after a match if I "saw any mistakes" or "what [my opponent] could have done better". These questions, even coming from players who genuinely want to improve, are very rarely conducive to improvement, because Magic is a game of asymmetric information. 1/5
Now that RC Ghent is over, I wanted to clarify what happened in my round 1, since most of it was off camera.
On turn 4 of G3, I played a Blooming Marsh untapped, missing the Dryad Arbor that was sitting with my nonland permanents.
I got paid for my choice to spend more time on Draft and Standard with a 0-6 streak in the Explorer day 2 of
#MTGWorlds
yesterday.
Even deserved, it always hurts to end a tournament that badly after starting it that well...
I'll see the Euro grinders among you at LEC Sofia!
As much as I despise giving your word to then take it back, the whole "public apology" culture regarding tournament wrongdoings has always felt fake and contrived to me. What does it mean exactly that someone is able to produce a statement that checks all the boxes? Nothing.
These finals of
#PTFinals
were great to watch, intricate and tense, with some very counterintuitive lines. If they « disgusted » you because a certain card was involved or a certain deck won in the end, maybe you don’t like the game as much as you think.
So many times over the tournament, I thought I was done and came back, thanks to some incredible draws (and some tight plays here and there). I wasn’t always the sharpest, but I’m still very happy about my play overall, including some decisions that ended up costing me games. 2/4
Remember that, instead of paying a 100€ entry fee for a constructed event with low prizes, you can stay at home and support any Twitch streamer for as little as 5$🙃
Tickets for LMS Paris are now on sale!
We look forward to seeing you from 16 to 18 September in Paris at Quartier des Ternes
To make it easier for you to book your trip,we can anticipate that the venue is located around metro station:Neuilly-PorteMaillot
What I miss is not the PTs overseas, visiting nice cities or facing the toughest competitors in person. It’s the improvised road trips, the cube drafts that end at 3AM in shared hotel rooms, or even the experience of getting lost in foreign countrysides...
Dernière session de test en draft avant les
#MTGWorlds
, je suis chaud bouillant dans ce format !
Merci à
@Playin_by_MB
qui me prête des boîtes afin de m’entraîner dans les meilleures conditions 💪🇫🇷🏆
Chat brought this up while I was streaming earlier. While I had never considered these exact situations, they are consistent with how the rules have worked for a while and should probably be seen as learning experiences rather than something to complain about. 1/7
Drafting infinite SIR has made me rediscover how GOOD filler-type playables are for the health of a format. They prevent people from forcing whatever deck they like best and always getting a good version of it. They also make the average game more scrappy, rewarding playskill.
This Standard format is almost as bad as magic players’ tendency to exaggerate everything.
Standard has always been solved at some point, with one or two decks dominating and a lot of people stubbornly refusing to join them. This one just happens to have been solved faster. 1/4
Worked very hard (unironically) to get to this result for the first

@LWIDELTOUW

for being formidable test partners and putting up with my usual indecisions.
Now let's start the new season strong!
Finally, I miss tournament adrenaline. I get some from home, but it’s often like I have to inject it to myself from a bottle, it doesn’t feel real. I miss win-and-ins, lose-and-outs, and remaking the world the night before when you should sleep but can’t.
If you're playing a tournament on MTGO, I think it's wrong in the first place to publicly ask your opponent to help you work around MTGO rules, however imperfect they are. Either they refuse and you make them look bad or they accept and you make them lose equity.
After seeing other people give (great) answers to this, I figured I'd add mine.
1 - Take your time. Your autopilot may be good, but it's not perfect.
2 - Play multiple formats / deck types. In addition to being refreshing, diversity will give you a wider perspective on the game.
I have spent my life as a Magic player trying not to care too much about results in order to be in the best possible mindset. Now I find myself having to try to care, and... turns out it’s just as hard.
Tonight was my craziest stream to date. After claiming
#1
back by going 5-0 with a Zirda companion deck, chat made me draft with reverse screen, slow motion mouse, inverted left and right clicks, Arena in Korean, picking all rares and playing 41 cards.
People are just great.
I’ll do my best to remember that game and not the other ones that weren’t so glorious... you played better and logically won.
The saddest part of that story is that the world will believe monored beats Temur 😥😥
Give

2 to 1 MATCHES!!! I wish they showed g3 of match one because he won an insane game I thought I had but his read was perfect and got me.
ONE might be a poor limited environment as a whole, but I don't really get the "abolish sealed" discourse. It has always been a legitimate, skill-intensive format that mostly gets a bad rep because people don't prepare adequately for it (when they prepare at all).
Playing, as expected, the best Thoughtseize deck ;)
#MythicInvitational
Depending on your Twitter, you may also guess some of the awesome people I prepared with.
I wish « biggest amount of frustration felt when cast by an opponent » wasn’t the main criterion for banning cards now.
This is such a level 0 approach. If you want games to be fun, ask yourself HOW they get to the point when resolving an average 5-mana spell becomes an issue.
Pro players who say they're bad at Magic don't actually believe they're worse than the average player... They see an ideal and do their best to remember how far they are from it because it motivates them to keep improving. 1/2
That was a wild day, between starting 4-3 and going 6-1, my buddy Alexey throwing everyone into his cauldron just before drawing out of top8 because of weird pair-downs... I can't yet process my feelings right now.
Thx everyone for the kind words and
@MajestiKGames
of course!
Hot take: if you're displeased with the cards people play against you to the point of asking them to remove them from their deck, maybe you should just build a cube.
