What’s next? PAC will begin its inquiry. Its report should be finalized by 2nd of December where budget will be debated in detail. Happening in the background are rumors of a motion of no confidence. But the plan is to get the budget passed by the 2nd wk of Dec. 5/5

Education has seen a slow trend down since 2019. In 2019 it used to make up around 37% of the total budget but only now making up 29%. Education remains the largest budget item. There has been slight bump of 5% in recurrent expenditure. 4/5

Rec. expenditure has seen a growth of 14% driven by a large increase in Debt Servicing (mostly repayment of CBSI loans), growth in PMO expenditure. Health recurrent budget has grown by 31% despite its payroll dropping slightly by 2% but a huge increase in Consultancy fees. 3/5

Dev. expenditure has grown by 45.68% mostly driven by huge increases in Ministries ‘responsible for economic growth’. Notably, Tourism received the biggest increase of 364% (potential short term gain)Comm/ Aviation, Fisheries and Mines also posting massive increases.

#SolsBudget2025 GNUT’s first budget issued, posting a deficit of SBD 1274 million, a further deterioration from the -647.6 posted in 2024 (revised). Revenue is back at 2019 levels while expenditure has grown substantially since 2019. 1/5 @terencewoodnz

Solomon Islands 🇸🇧 is the only Pacific country to come out a slightly critical of Trump 🇺🇸, saying it will “watch very closely” the future Trump administration’s moves on climate. Other Pacific leaders (Fiji, PNG, Tonga) have released very diplomatic-friendly statements.

I was interviewed by @jordaaaye for her excellent @ABCPacific story on the Solomons government's push to establish a 'Golden Passport' scheme. Similar programs in Vanuatu and Caribbean states have been good revenue raisers but carry security risks.
