I use monitors. It is something I prefer over in-ear monitors. You can mitigate volume using both and conversely hurt yourself with both. It's a personal choice and it will be a journey for me to train myself to listen lower.
@JBONAMASSA My understanding is that musicians wear in-ear monitors and have their own separate mix. Volume should be readily controllable. But old school musicians might still have monitor speakers pointed at them instead of the newfangled in-ear ones.
