Our models show that continued imports could alter the genetic makeup of native populations threatening local adaptations. We propose a proactive solution: invest in selective breeding of native bees to improve key traits within a population already adapted to local conditions

Our key findings: • Small percentages of imports (1.5-4%) resulted in notable introgression of non-native alleles • While honey yield improved, fitness declined • Non native genes spread rapidly • Halting imports did not fully reverse the trend and introgression persisted

New preprint: “Modelling the impacts of imports of non-native honey bees into the native Apis mellifera mellifera population in Ireland”. We used stochastic simulations to study how non-native genes spread over time and affect fitness and honey production.

Human-mediated movement of organisms for agriculture and ecosystem services often results in hybridisation and introgression between native and non-native populations. While introgression may...

@Ireneee_dc is working on her MSc thesis, developing a framework to study introgression in honeybee populations using SIMplyBee https://t.co/srqO6F0AdG with @janaobsteter and @laura_strachan1
