Our current research includes increasing milkweed in established habitat. This week, we prepared a site using a prescribed burn to remove non-native plants. It was a great field day! Thanks @blankparkzoo, @alliantenergy, and @IADeptAg for joining us! Video: Brent Pringnitz

While white prairie clover isn't quite as fun to say as purple prairie clover, both native clovers attract bees, birds and butterflies. Before blooming, you can tell them apart by leaf shape: white has wider leaves than the more narrow purple. 📷 courtesy of Gordon Garcia

Happy DÍa de los Muertos! For many people in Mexico, monarchs symbolize the return of their ancestors’ souls. Because of this cultural significance, monarchs are often incorporated into DÍa de los Muertos celebrations. https://t.co/rSACJxifbF

How do monarchs know to visit flowers? Is it a learned behavior or something they’re born with? And what attracts monarchs to flowers? Is it visual, scents, or something else? Researchers recently asked these questions and found some interesting results: https://t.co/I4p0ZDOziu

Live, laugh, sippy. Karner blue caterpillars are very picky eaters and will only eat wild lupine. Karner blue butterflies however, will sip nectar from a variety of other wildflowers. As you can see from this video, the Karners love butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa).

October is #LeavetheLeaves Month! Keeping leaves and plant stems in your yard through the winter is important for pollinator conservation. Leaves provides insulation for bumblebees and butterflies, and plant stems provide nesting habitat for native bees. https://t.co/cBAkWQu1Oq

Leave perennial gardens standing this fall! They add winter beauty, protect root systems, and support pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects. Remove only diseased or infested plants to prevent problems. Clean up in early spring instead.
