At 1570 Lawrence West, Lankin is evicting tenants on the first floor because it wants to install in-suite laundry and dishwashers for new tenants. This is not about an old building needing work, but a landlord seeking to attract a new demographic of tenant.

In our renovictions report released earlier this month, we looked at how some landlords who renovict tenants are open about how renovations and turning over units are central to their business model. Lankin Investments, formerly Pulis Investments, is one of these landlords.

The @cityoftoronto opened these shelter hotels 3 years ago, claiming they were a "pathway to housing". Now they're suddenly closing, and residents are getting forced out without a housing plan. @dixon_hall's Director of Housing Services, David Reycraft, everybody:
Coverage from @CBCToronto of Strathcona residents demanding housing and answers! Including this infuriating statement from Dixon Hall: “I guess we didn’t spend enough time thinking about what happens when [the shelter hotels] actually close.”

Renoviction is a landlord strategy to permanently displace tenants from their homes, determined by the presence of rent gaps, sanctioned by the state, and contested by working-class people in Toronto New report from me and @renovictions ⬇️
Our report on renovictions in Toronto, co-authored by @colefwebber, is now available at https://t.co/Tkk6vuDxej The report analyzes the conditions that give rise to renoviction, how landlords go about renovicting tenants and how tenants have organized in response to renoviction.

Unfortunately for management, these tenants are organized and have a history of winning their fights. They are determined to get an answer one way or another.

Parking is crucial to these tenants. A high portion of tenants work for ride sharing, food delivery, and taxi companies. Many others have disabilities and need their cars to get to medical appointments.

Last month, after Janice Walker’s mom died, her landlord, Myriad Property Mgmt., told Janice she had 30 days to get out. A rep said it was “company policy.” Then they pressured her for money she doesn’t have. Janice is fighting to stay in her home with the help of her neighbours.

The unilateral switch to digital hearings at the LTB has had a dramatic impact on every facet of a hearing. ACTO put together a shareable, illustrated doc to demonstrate the impact of the digital divide on tenants.
