Thorncliffe Park tenants on rent strike disrupted an @OntarioCofC event last week that @NorthcrestDev CEO Derek Goring was participating in. Northcrest is a subsidiary of our landlord PSP Investments. Tenants pressed our demand that PSP withdraw the AGIs at our buildings.

Above guideline rent increases (AGIs) are highlighted in the report as a significant burden for tenants. Starlight, a Daily Bread partner, applies for more AGIs than any other landlord in Toronto—including in Thorncliffe Park where tenants have been on rent strike since May 1

As food banks talk about how rising rents contribute to food insecurity they partner with landlords like Starlight Investments, who drive up rents and make it harder for tenants to put food on the table
In partnership today, #DailyBreadTO & @nyhfb have released #WhosHungry2023, a call to action from a city in crisis. The report profiles #foodinsecurity in #Toronto, revealing that low incomes, high costs of living & inflation are driving #foodbank use ➡️ https://t.co/DX6SFbaIif

PSP Investments has filed to evict Thorncliffe Park tenants on rent strike in protest of rent hikes we can’t afford. We continue to call on the crown corporation and public sector pension to withdraw the above guideline rent increases at our buildings. https://t.co/2RVViSM4D0

What this would have amounted to is a back door mass eviction/cash grab on the part of the landlord by way of making units unliveable, in the sense that tenants would be cut off from their means of earning income or going to the doctor.

Parking is scarce in Mabelle and so even if tenants wanted to park elsewhere they would be unlikely to find anything. Many tenants would likely have had to move.

Tenants at 25 Mabelle depend heavily on their parking. Many drive for ride share companies and food delivery services. Others need their cars to get to work or medical appointments.

After months of organizing todays committee of adjustment hearing should be the final nail in the coffin for the landlord’s backhanded attempts to dispossess tenants of the parking guaranteed in their lease.

The tenant association at 25 Mabelle has stopped North Edge Properties dead in their tracks in their most recent attempt to eliminate all 290 tenant parking spaces in the building.
Over 50 tenants at 25 Mabelle, including one currently in the hospital for Covid, joined a virtual meeting last on the long weekend to strategize about how to fight their landlord’s attempt to eliminate all of the buildings parking overnight

After tenants in 25 Cougar Ct launched a campaign to halt Starlight/@MetCapLivingMgt's 5.5% rent increase, 12 tenants received harassing phone calls claiming to be from MetCap. Starlight/MetCap thinks they can stop tenants from organizing, but neighbours are stronger than ever.

Unfortunately for management, these tenants are organized and have a history of winning their fights. They are determined to get an answer one way or another.

In response to tenant pressure, management has delayed the elimination of parking several times now, but has also shut down their on site office and tenants emails to management accounts are bouncing back or going unanswered.

Rather than asking for tenants to provide proof of accessible parking permits, management are asking tenants for detailed medical information.
