🛬 Wetlands landing 🌴💦 North of the mountains is an expanse of jungle intersected by rivers that run into the Pacific Ocean 🌊 Many of the airstrips are wet & slippery but this one, being on a hill, is always dry & dusty. You can always tell when an aircraft’s been to Doufu 🟧

⚠️Departing with a tailwind💨 With uphill landings we usually land with a tailwind due to the anabatic effect but some airstrips are located on ridges that reverse that. Being able to land/takeoff with head or tailwinds are essential tools for bush/mountain flying 🫡⛰️

2/2 This sort of approach should only be considered if you are very familiar with the surrounding terrain and have an escape route. Here’s what the airstrip looks like without the clouds surrounding it. In the first video, you can just make out that shack to the left.

⛔️ Extreme go-around⚠️ ☁️ This airstrip is on a ridge at 6500ft and surrounded by high terrain. To the left and right, the terrain drops off affording a safe go-around. At 16s you see the airstrip is lined up but it’s not safe to land so a go-around is executed. 1/2 Continued…

💨 Blustery landing in the middle of the jungle🌴 It’s not all big mountains and tiny airstrips, Papua also has large expanses of virgin, flat jungle to the north and south of the mountain ranges. These are hot and humid places with crocodile infested rivers 🐊

Another satisfied reader 🥰 Have you got your copy yet? 👀
This was on my to be read list for far too long. Loved, loved, loved it!! 5⭐️ What skill to be able to fly in places like that. Incredible! 🤯 @IndoPilot

Rising terrain before touchdown‼️ ⛰️Although subtle, this approach features tree covered rising terrain just before the start of the airstrip. These visual illusions have to be ignored to ensure the correct approach angle but also considered so you don’t hit the trees! 🌴

@IndoPilot Just finished reading your book whilst holidaying in Rhodes. Cover to cover in a few days on the sun lounger! Lots of laugh out loud moments and get tales of flying exploits. Touching stories and great for any pilot - even ones with only 200 hours on PA28s!
