What ‘everyday things surprise you’?That trees grow out of pavements, that air’s still free on low cost airlines? Regina Baiocchi’s piece may inspire your ideas for a suitably surprising playlist on Essential Classics

. Go on, surprise me by joining me at 9.30.

Not sure about that Ian. Mostly they are planted in pavements. And frankly we need far more of them to help clean the air. Although we also need local councils who realise they need after care. Millions die because they are plonked and not properly nurtured.

Good morning, Ian and everyone. After yesterday’s success (thanks again) I should perhaps let others have their turn in the Playlist but will look forward to the outcome.

It is great having you back btw.
Trees growing from pavements is definitely a good point but more so, buddleia growing from tiny cracks in bricks or guttering gives me a strange sense of ‘hope’.
Nature will persevere.

Surprises? If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise - Andrew Carter's a cappella choral version should sneak the Teddy Bears' Picnic under the R3 radar.

How about “No Surprises” by Radiohead? Pianist Christopher O’Reilly transcribed it for solo piano and his playing is magical. Plus don’t forget Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood had a surprise second career as a film and orchestral composer. So surprise us all with Radiohead

I am guessing that audiences around the world would have been both surprised and amazed when Gustavia Holst’s Planets Suite was first heard. Jupiter in particular continues to both surprise and delight.

If your intrepid producer can locate Marc Minkowski's recording of the Surprise Symphony with Les Musiciens du Louvre then the surprise is... not what you'd expect. 😉

Absolutely loved that Finzi Ian. Dies Natalis is a fantastic piece & a great singer on that recording. Happily think Finzi is currently having a bit of a renaissance. Heard his Ecologues on R3 recently- also brilliant music.

William Brown - what wonderful clarity of diction in the Finzi. Just shows you can sound your ‘r’ s without its being a murrrrrder, and without sounding too old fashioned. And it makes all the difference to the words.
