ISD analysis covered in the @nytimes, @MotherJones, @Forbes, @axios & more👇 ISD found that misinformation during Hurricane Helene fueled antisemitic hate & election conspiracies & was promoted by politicians & extremists, exploiting an information void.

ISD analysed these ads and determined that this influence operation is likely tied to the Doppelganger campaign, which impersonates legitimate news outlets to promote pro-Kremlin narratives.

Other ads perpetuated false narratives that weapons being supplied to Ukraine from NATO countries were being used by Hamas militants.

For example, some ads claimed that the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza would send refugees fleeing into France and Germany.

The ads then used the Israel-Hamas war to exacerbate divisions around polarising topics, such as immigration and economic decline, in France and Germany.

These ads pushed pro-Kremlin narratives by criticising military support and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, as well as the US’s role in the conflict.

After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, a pro-Kremlin ad network began targeting French & German audiences with mis- and disinformation about the Russia-Ukraine war, tying it back to the Israel-Hamas conflict to exacerbate domestic tensions.

The Irish Channel is a website & associated social accounts employing gen AI to create misleading articles that perpetuate election denial narratives similar to those in the US, among other tactics. Report author @ciaranoconnor talks to WIRED about it.

Other viral hurricane narratives have incited direct threats against FEMA, urging militias to confront officials, and accusing FEMA of being an arm of the state of Israel or suggesting that Democrats "control the weather," as posted by US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

False claims about attacks on FEMA representatives have also been used to encourage violence. In one instance, a video from 2023 was used as visuals to accompany a claim that a NC FEMA director was "beaten up." The video generated 8.1M views on X.
