Albion mills was destroyed by fire #OnThisDay 1791. It was the first steam powered commercial flour mill in UK, built in 1786 and powered by #Boulton and #Watt engines. The mill machinery was designed and installed by John Rennie

Tees Newport bridge, Middlesbrough, opened #OnThisDay 1934. It was the first large vertical lift bridge in Britain. It was designed by David Anderson of Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Dorman Long. It is grade II listed, see

Sir Robert Rawlinson, ICE Past President, was born #onthisday 1810. He was a member of the Sanitary Commission for the Crimea which improved the health of the British army by improving hygienic conditions in camp and hospitals.

Amazing what you can find mixed in with some office admin. This was with a list of papers which were to be microfilmed in the 1960's. It's completely unrelated but fascinating to see the war Office / Air Ministry using our library during the war.

Sir William Fairbairn was born #onthisday 1789. Designed the rectangular tube for Robert Stephenson's Britannia Bridge with Eaton Hodgkinson. Also Water Street Bridge on the Liverpool & Manchester railway.
