Combined with what seems like active, real-time intelligence support for Pakistan using Chinese fighter aircraft & IADS against India (and its mostly Russian systems), the Tibet succession situation feels like a ticking time bomb in China-India relations.

“All those who follow the Dalai Lama feel that the incarnation is to be decided by the established convention and as per the wish of the Dalai Lama himself,” said Rijiju, who represents Arunachal Pradesh, an Indian state that China claims as south Tibet.

“Beijing will assess that the US can be drawn further into another Mideast quagmire and do everything within its power to keep US forces tied up in West Asia instead of in the West Pacific, where China’s strategic attention is concentrated". via @scmpnews.

Tanker war precedents very relevant to how things are likely to play out in #Hormuz. Also, the highlighted warning (about confusing tactical prowess for strategic success) is an important one for US to heed. Anti-air munitions too scarce to keep the tactical edge forever.

US “encourages” PRC to talk to Iran about keeping Hormuz open. But Beijing will look first for a separate deal with Tehran to secure its OWN shipping—not freedom of navigation. Chinese drones and missile technologies also likely to be key elements in IRGC blockade package + mines

One difference now: this is the major artery for China’s oil and gas, will be hard for PRC to avoid energy insecurity without taking on some new risks around Hormuz. Small boats, missiles, and drones more easily targeted and less effective than sea mines, which Iran will use.

Right — and no reason Iran won’t be willing to avoid targeting Chinese ships, crews, and cargoes. We have been watching Iran’s Houthis do as much in the Red Sea for a while…1/2.
