Expression of genes located on Starships are influenced by both the strain background and the specific condition, suggesting that the Starships mediate many important fungal phenotypes.

Starships carry important cargo genes that have been previously investigated. These include the biosynthetic gene clusters for Fumihopaside A, and Fumigermin. As well as the HAC cluster that contributes to virulence, hypoxia, and biofilm formation.

Starships are distributed across the entire genomic landscape, being found in 79 genomic regions. Relatedness only partly explains these patterns, showing that the Starships are large contributors to strain heterogeneity.

All together, these Starships make up nearly 3% of the pangenome of A. fumigatus and comprise a large part of the accessory genomic compartment.

We find 20 high confidence Starships that are mobile and segregating in the population, with large variation in frequency and gene content.
