A year ago, we took office and brought the community into City Hall.
We still have so much work to do, but we've had some big wins in year one -- and our movement is just getting started.
We call on Council President Nury Martinez to resign, and we want a full and thorough investigation into who else was part of this, and how deeply this is rooted into the foundation of City Hall.
LA County Sherffis just murdered this 18 year old child as he was running away for his life two days before Father’s Day. Ive known this young mans father for years and hearing his pain is something I never want anyone to go through.

WE DID IT!
We ran this campaign to build community power for workers, immigrants, the unhoused, people of color, young people, renters, and all of us who have been neglected by our city officials.
Now, we’re bringing this movement into City Hall.
¡Sí se pudo!
Today LA City Council is voting, again, to criminalize homelessness. You may remember this from a few weeks ago, a few years ago, or if you moved here to avoid the Dust Bowl.
It's because they've done the same thing since the Great Depression. And it's never worked. (thread)
Killed two days before Christmas as she was trying on dresses for her quinceañera. I’m heartbroken and angry at another senseless killing by the LAPD. My only hope is that this serves as the impetus to finally reconstruct what public safety means in LA. (a thread)
In Echo Park lake with a 1000 of my closest friends. We are not going to stop until we defund the police, get rid of Jackie Lacey, and transform this society.

We loved hosting LA Pride in our district! One of the best parts was watching people’s faces the moment they realized it was the real
@JanelleMonae
on the
@ACLU_SoCal
float!
🎉 We’re in first place!🎉
This is historic, it’s nearly impossible for a challenger to beat an incumbent in the primary. We faced millions of dollars in right-wing attacks from Wall Street landlords, the police union, and big developers— but thanks to *you*, we’re on top!
The harm done to our city by the majority of Latino Councilmembers will take years to undo.
But the Black & Brown solidarity I shared with
@EunissesH
and
@ib2_real
to support
@mikebonin
showed me that the next generation is ready to lead with unity and love.
We’re up by almost 1,000 votes! If these trends hold, our movement will win Council District 13!
The new generation is here to stay. We will end this era of backroom deals, stop pitting us against each other, and bring in a politics of love and solidarity.
I’m running for LA City Council District 13 to build community power for workers, immigrants, the unhoused, people of color, young people, and all of us who have been neglected by our city officials.
I’m asking you to join me — we have a city to win.
It has come to my attention that the leaked audio released over the weekend repeatedly mentions both myself and my opponent, with people in the tapes saying, “I want to make sure we protect Mitch,” referring to Mitch as “[Nury’s] guy,” and disparaging myself as the “opponent.”
15,000 workers just authorized the biggest strike in modern US history. Why?
Because a single mom on the average housekeeper salary must work *17 hours a day* to afford housing.
Because the cooks who feed us must work 3 jobs to feed their families.
Because they deserve better.
As this video clearly shows, given an opportunity to walk away Kevin De Leon chose to be defiant, just as he’s done multiple times in council chambers. This is yet another example of what disqualifies him to lead.
For our City to heal he must do the right thing and resign.
Full video of conflict Friday night involving Kevin De Leon.

Yesterday, the Public Safety Committee approved a $54 million contract for 236 police officers to patrol the Metro for just 6 months.
That's over $225k per officer, for only half a year. Let's talk about what that means.
Think about how we could use that money to improve our Metro system.
We could have:
✅Fare-free Metro
✅More frequent service
✅Clean trains and busses
✅Unarmed professionals to help folks dealing with homelessness or mental health issues.
As a city, we need to do better.
Streaming companies are some of the biggest players in media today, so the workers who make our beloved shows and movies deserve a contract that reflects it!
We stand in solidarity with the
@animationguild
in their upcoming negotiations! You deserve a

We should to cancel rent for these small businesses and not pushing workers to risk their lives for the sake of brunch! POC are the backbone of the restaurant industry and are dying at high numbers. This is racially and class tone deaf on so many levels!
Since helping unionize my high school hotel job, I've worked my whole life to expand workers' rights so everyone can live with dignity.
In honor of May Day, let's look at just some of the anti-worker corporations propping up my opponent, starting with McDonald's. Yes, that one.
What an incredibly offensive description of renters from the landlord lobby.
The average house in LA costs nearly $1 million and rising. Renters aren't "complacent" or “satisfied” about anything. We want to own a home, but interests who profit off the system make it impossible.
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Police Department released body cam footage of officers killing three people experiencing mental health crises who deserved life-affirming care but were met with deadly force, all within the first three days of the New Year.
🎉We're up by 6.6%🎉
I'm so grateful to the residents of CD13 for believing in our movement.
We can't wait to work with you to usher in a new era for Los Angeles. One where we solve our homelessness, housing, and governance crises with proven, community-powered solutions.
This massive influx of late-arriving votes shows me that the people of LA want to do their research and really get to know the candidates.
I'm grateful that once you took that time, you chose to join our movement for a better LA.
We are elated to receive the
@latimes
endorsement!
This is a validation of everything we’ve built together, our shared vision for a better LA City Council, and our movement’s power to make the changes LA deserves!
Help push us over the finish line
This movement always has been, and always will be, about the workers.
We've spent the last year bringing together all the social movements in LA from labor to climate to police accountability and beyond. That’s why it’s not just me that’s going to city hall, it’s all of us.
Mitch was already implicated in the tapes before today. Now, we can no longer ignore his entanglement in this racist, corrupt culture.
We call on Mitch O’Farrell to step down as Acting Council President, so Council can be assured a fair and unbiased election of a new President.
The people are using their votes to speak loud and clear that they want an end to these failed policies. As we see our lead continue to grow, voters are asking for a new vision where we solve homelessness with housing and mental health/addiction services instead of punishment.
Today, LA's Public Safety Committee will decide whether we should allow the LAPD to use a "robot dog"
These mechs were already rejected in NYC because they were used to aggressively police working-class communities of color.
We can't allow this dystopian machine in LA. (thread)
With abortion and our rights under attack, assaulting protestors and arresting journalists can't be our city’s response
Six journalists in the US were arrested or assaulted by law enforcement at protests since Friday
Every instance was in LA -- accountability is long overdue
Today, disgraced Councilmember Kevin de León once again decided to show up to City Council.
I won't let Kevin halt the City's business and hold Council hostage by stopping meetings.
But I also won't let him use the Latino community as a prop just so he can hold onto power.
We were elected to represent workers, families, and vulnerable tenants making minimum wage -- not corporate landlords who have been profiting off our city for far too long.
Keeping people out of homelessness isn't controversial. It's the least we can do.
We’re thrilled to honor John Waters, the iconic Pope of Trash himself, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside friends and collaborators

How do my opponent’s campaign donations lead to *your* rent going up? Let’s follow the money.
Unlike the incumbent, I’m not taking a dime from developers, cops, or corporations, because I’m not running for them, I’m running for us.
Join our movement:
The City of LA stands with
@WGAWest

City Council just *unanimously* passed a resolution in solidarity with the WGA workers on strike, urging the studios to come back to the negotiating table and offer a fair deal.
We are beyond saddened by the tragic police shooting of an unhoused woman in Silver Lake. This woman was a daughter, a friend, a neighbor. In her life she made people laugh and she made people's days. She did not deserve to live on the streets and she did not deserve to die.
➡️A pair of LAPD officers crashed their car in a rogue police chase and then tried to cover it up.
➡️An officer sent sexually explicit text messages to a subordinate.
Even though the LAPD Chief recommended that these officers be fired, they were allowed to stay on the job.
These workers being physically attacked while expressing their right to protest is a new low for the Fairmont. They clean the bathrooms, cook the food and serve the tourists of this city. They deserve respect, and the best way to show it is to come to the table with a fair deal.
Today
@FairmontMiramar
security officers attacked striking workers at their hotel. Our members won’t give in to bully tactics at the negotiating table or the picket line.
#SoCalHotelStrike
When confronted about his Echo Park Displacement, my opponent went full conspiracy theory — calling it a “False Flag takeover” and implying a UCLA study is fake news.
$2m+ wasted, 7 deaths, only 8% housed and more encampments than before.
Get the facts:
If the last few years have taught us anything, there is no middle ground on racism. We cannot allow anti-Blackness to have a foothold on our Council Chamber.
This is typical Mitch, refusing to pick a side. No more half-measures. Without accountability there is no atonement.
While we are happy to see Nury Martinez resign, and we reiterate our call for Kevin De Leon and Gil Cedillo to follow – it's still not enough.
In order for our City to truly heal, we must fully investigate the disenfranchisement of Black Angelenos and tenants of all races.
New: Nury Martinez resigned her seat on the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, days after the release of an explosive leaked audio of a racist, crude conversation.
🚨 Our lead is now up over 9% 🚨
We've said it the entire campaign: what we win is equal to the power that we build — and we've built an amazingly powerful community here in District 13.
This movement is just getting started.
Grad student workers at USC are voting in a union election *this week* so they can collectively bargain for better wages, health care, protections for international students and much more.
Don't let USC's anti-union campaign dissuade you from doing the right thing - sí se puede!
We’re in the lead by 5% with so many more progressive ballots to be counted!
To everyone who knocked doors,
phonebanked, donated, and lent their amazing talents to our campaign: Thank you!!
Together we’re building a multiracial multigenerational movement of love and solidarity!
Our first ever motion would amend the emergency declaration to remove the end date of January 31st, so we can make sure we get permanent tenant safeguards before anyone loses their protections, and prevent a wave of evictions!
COVID tenant protections expire in just 12 days.
That’s why we want you to hear from the people whose lives will be affected most – the tenants.
If we don’t win permanent protections on Friday, far too many renters will end up on the streets.
We can’t let that happen.
Today, we announced "Access to Hollywood" - a facelift for Hollywood Blvd, including:
🚲3.6 miles of protected bike lanes
🚶♂️New crosswalks & wider sidewalks
🚍A dedicated bus lane
➕Much more
This is a HUGE deal for mobility in LA.
Today, we took the bus to work! I love riding the bus because instead of being behind the wheel, frustrated at the traffic, I'm laid back enjoying a nice book.
Check it out!
Progressive candidates and I demand the immediate resignation of councilmembers Kevin De Leon, Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and LA Fed President Ron Herrera.
We stand with the sea of voices calling for accountability and action in the face of racism, anti-blackness, and bigotry.
$18.86/hour after 23 years of serving our students is unacceptable, and not enough to get by in this city.

After 23 years of custodial work in preschools from Hollywood to South Los Angeles, Bernice Young said, her pay has climbed from $10.01 an hour to $18.86 an hour. It is barely enough to make the rent on a $2,000-a-month one-bedroom apartment.
Thanks to your support and grassroots organizing, we earned more votes in this election than Mitch has in any election in his entire political career.
I'm incredibly grateful to the community of CD13 for believing in our movement and delivering this historic result.
Today is Free Transit Day in honor of Rosa Parks' Birthday!
But Free Transit Day should be everyday. Fares only make up a fraction of Metro's budget, and most of that money just goes back into enforcement and collecting more fares.
It's time to make fare-free Metro permanent.
Dodger Stadium workers are banding together to fight for the wages and treatment they deserve by authorizing a strike vote right before LA hosts the All Star Game!
We stand in solidarity.
It's astounding that renters don't have a right to a lawyer in an eviction court in LA, because we know these laws keep people from becoming homeless.
After NYC passed their Right to Counsel law, 84% of tenants represented by city lawyers were able to remain in their homes.
This is a new low. Villanueva is using his power to intimidate, harass, and flagrantly violate the civil rights of anyone who tries to hold him accountable.
But there’s something we can do: vote to pass the LA County Measure A to finally allow us Angelenos to kick him out!!
Breaking: Sheriff’s deputies are taking boxes from Civilian Oversight Commissioner Patty Giggin’s Los Angeles home, part of a sprawling investigation that includes Metro and Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. The COC has held a series of investigative hearings into alleged gangs in LASD.
Over 95% of landlords have a lawyer in eviction court, versus just 3% for tenants. We know this uneven playing field leads to illegal evictions
We need a universal right to a lawyer in LA to prevent illegal evictions and keep families out of homelessness
I'm proud to stand in solidarity with
@UNITEHERE11
and tourism workers across the city. Because people who work in LA should be able to afford to live in LA.

@GavinNewsom
vetoed AB826 that would’ve helped undocumented folks with food and AB3216 that would’ve given hospitality workers the right to return to their job without losing seniority. What. A. Total. Disappointment. He totally screwed over working class POC.
Even though he was a wild apex predator, P-22 was our local celebrity — and a beloved one at that. His journey to our backyard in Griffith Park was a Hollywood movie made real.
He was also a victim of car culture, while being a brilliant reminder of the Los Angeles before it.
Tomorrow, City Council will vote on an LAPD contract that will pile an additional $1 billion into a failed system, while taking away resources that could benefit the working class communities of color who need them the most.
I will be voting NO.
Here’s why. (thread)
AirBnbs take away so much from our communities: from rent-controlled units to our peace and quiet.
We have a law on the books already to help, but there's a big problem – no one's enforcing it.
We ran on getting rid of illegal AirBnbs, and we can't wait to get to work.
WGA members have authorized a strike by 97.85%. Writers are ready for a deal from the studios that allows writers to share in the success of the content they create and build a stable life.
#WGAStrong
We just discovered that the chosen moderator of tonight’s town hall — who was one of three people that selected the questions and planned the event — endorsed my opponent in the primary and wrote disparaging remarks on their personal website about our campaign. (thread)
Studios are enjoying $30 billion profits while the workers who power the industry struggle to pay rent.
This is a fight for the future of Hollywood.
Everyone should be compensated for their work and the studios have more than enough money to pay these writers what they deserve.
My opponent is manipulating the upcoming homeless count to lower his district numbers. But that data is used to distribute resources that will help end homelessness! By helping himself politically, he's hurting the rest of us.
Demand an accurate count:
Big Real estate is trying to scare you away from our campaign. They just dropped $50,000 against us, using the same scare-tactics as the GOP, because they’re afraid of one thing: working people coming together.
Let's show them they can't buy this election
By the end of this LAPD contract, the starting salary for a police officer will be $97k.
How different would our city look if the starting salary for a mental health professional was $97k?
Back in 2019, the unhoused residents of Echo Park asked to meet with my opponent, Mitch O’Farrell. His refusal, and total neglect of the situation, lead to LA’s most violent and wasteful failure of homelessness policy. Here is his legacy. (thread)
I spent a lot of time with homeless service providers on the streets of Hollywood, learning how our city interacts with workers on the frontlines of the nation’s worst homelessness crisis.
Much of it was shocking, but I left inspired for the future. Let’s talk about it. (thread)
Renters make up the majority of residents in LA, but far too often tenants are left feeling powerless, battling against the entire system to stay in their homes.
If we want to solve our homelessness crisis, we need to implement common sense renter protections.
There's only one week until election day and the end of our campaign.
We're so proud of what we've built together: thousands of volunteers, the most grassroots donations in the City, and a collective vision of the LA we deserve.
Help us bring it home:
Thinking of other ways to get to work? There are lots of options out there!
I recently went to work on
@metrolosangeles
and it was a great experience. I hope you consider taking it to work next time.
Landlords in LA have a lawyer in 88% of eviction proceedings, but for tenants it’s just 3%. That’s not a fair fight.
When people have the right to a lawyer in an eviction court, it levels the playing field and prevents folks from falling into homelessness.
Femmes and LGBTQ+ people are increasingly under attack, with same-sex marriage and contraception seemingly the next to be stripped away -- we need to reclaim our rights across all systems, including universal healthcare. The work will take years, but the fight starts now.
LA has been run by cynical and callous politicians who make decisions that affect millions of us in corrupt backroom deals. We must elect a new generation of ethical leaders who have our best interest at heart.
But that's not enough. We must change how our government works. 🧵
Make no mistake, Little Armenia exists in District 13 because of the Armenian Genocide.
We stand in solidarity every day with our Armenian siblings, but especially today, as reports come in that Azerbaijan has broken the ceasefire in a completely unprovoked attack.

We’ve just heard a cyclist was critically injured on Sunset Blvd last night in Echo Park. We are deeply saddened by this totally preventable tragedy.
My opponent hasn’t built a single foot of protected bike lane in his decade overseeing CD13, we *must* change that, immediately.
Even with LA pummeled by days of rainstorms, we are still in a drought.
That's because we allow billions of gallons of water to flow directly into the ocean instead of capturing the water to use during dry periods.
Here is how we change that. (thread)
On Friday my opponent will try to mortgage our future by rushing through his 2028 Olympic Games agreement, putting us on the hook for BILLIONS that we should invest in ending homelessness.
But Council did something different for the ‘84 games and it can do even more now (Thread)
This is an unbelievably big win for working people across our city.
A public bank allows LA to cut out the Wall Street middlemen and accelerate so many desperately needed projects like building social housing, jobs programs, and transitioning to 100% clean energy!

will reinvest profits in the public interest, putting the power of capital in the hands of the people.
This February, rents for rent-stabilized units in LA are scheduled to increase by 7-9%.
If we allow a 7-9% rent hike to go into effect, it would be catastrophic for our housing and homelessness crisis.
That's why today, we took the first step to prevent that from happening. 🧵
Metro doesn't feel safe, and that needs to change. Let’s look at the facts and not the fearmongering:
Every few months, we spend tens of millions of dollars on LAPD overtime for our Metro system. But it doesn't stop crime increases, overdoses or homelessness.
(Thread)
The LAPD officer's union deletes, reposts and then apologizes for this tweet taking LA Times photos out of context to advocate for more police on metro.
"We apologize for any misunderstanding."
This story is, of course, complete garbage. I was alerted to the tapes in this tweet at the same time as the LAT:
Political operatives supporting Mitch have been calling reporters for days to push this because they want to delegitimize the recordings.
Last night, LA Fed delegates voted to NOT endorse Mitch O’Farrell. I’ve spent years in the House of Labor, and our democratic process never ceases to inspire me.
Thank you to every union leader, even the ones on the other side of this issue, for always engaging in good faith.
Last night proved that the movement we built is well on its way to winning power for working people in CD13, and if voting trends continue, we feel confident that the final tally will have us in first place.
This is unheard of against an incumbent, and it's because of your work.
As our first day on City Council comes to a close, I'm reflecting on the movement that brought us here.
It's not just about me getting sworn in — it's about the housekeepers, the young people, the immigrants, the renters, and everyone coming with us to City Hall.
¡Sí se pudo!
Traffic violence is the
#1
killer of children in LA, and it's only getting worse.
We desperately need:
✅Better + more crosswalks
✅Slower car speeds in residential neighborhoods
✅Safety improvements near schools
✅Bike lanes + better transit to give folks options to get around
Last year in Los Angeles, more people were killed by someone driving a car than by someone wielding a gun. The second-largest U.S. city has become the traffic violence capital of the nation.
We’re coming in bold, but our movement will never force policies on residents, that’s how things got done under the cruel and corrupt status quo.
We won because we represent the majority of Angelenos, who want effective and compassionate solutions we can collaborate on together.
NEW: Mayor-elect Karen Bass will have to work with a new progressive cohort on the City Council that ran on pushing LA to the left.
"I think we're going to come in very bold, very aggressive because we're coming in with that mandate," Councilmember-elect Hugo Soto-Martinez said.
Thank you to everyone who made this victory possible. There’s more to say and a long list of incredible people to thank— but for now, you can read our full statement here:

for pointing out that just 23% of bus stops in the City of LA have shelters.
That’s why we passed a motion directing StreetsLA to report on a list of all bus stops in CD13 without shelter, and a plan to install shelters at all of them.
Even though LA has one of the highest minimum wages in the country, it would still take 3 full-time min. wage jobs to afford a 2-bedroom apartment in our City.
If we want to fix this, we need higher paying jobs, more housing, and cheaper rents.

Resignations of the councilmembers involved in the leaked audio are a crucial first step, but Los Angeles must vote out Mitch O’Farrell and all councilmembers who put personal gains and petty grievances over the communities they are supposed to represent.
