sports will NEVER be as important as music or any other art. everyone can run and kick balls. a FEW can write and produce songs. being creative and expressing yourselves is something no football player can do successfully and win awards for that
The photo boxes at March Madness are extremely tight, & every time I would stand up to drop off a card the chair would flop down...
I realized I could loop my chair to my Think Tank belt aka I have CHANTS!!

Love how these frames turned out with the light hitting her as she crosses the finish line with STYLE!
If you ask me what camera gear you SHOULD get, but don't tell me a budget... I'm just sending you this.
3x Canon R3 ($4999.99 per) = $14,997.97
Canon RF 15-35 F2.8 = $2099.00
Canon RF 24-105 F2.8 = $2999.99
Canon RF 100-300 F2.8 = $9499.99
Total: $29,596.95
I always get the question "What lens should I get" ??
Every time (regardless of brand) I recommend the 70-200 F2.8. It's a WORKHORSE of a lens.
Tight version: Cleaner background, more action!
Wide version: Stands full of fans cheering!

Whenever there is a sale I always think back to 2019 when Amazon had a price error and sold camera gear for $100
Maybe one day we will see this pricing again
Going to breakdown some of the cost of going to meets as a freelance photographer
Avg 4 day meet
✈️: $500-$800
🏨: $800-$1500
🚗: $200-$400
🍴: $80-$300
📸: $10,000 - $25,000 (our investment)
So no, I’m not going to work for exposure/free 🤷🏻♂️
Going to breakdown some costs for one major Championship as an athlete/coach.
USAs specifically
And how impossible it is potentially for unsigned athletes with no financial backing.
Since nobody likes to give numbers
This year Sydney McLaughlin became the first woman in history to break 13.00 for the 100m hurdles, 23.00 for 200m and 53.00 for the 400m hurdles.
She also set a new women's 400m hurdles world record with 51.90.

First time photographing the Ducks at Autzen! It shocked some people when I told them this fact, but it’s true!
Thank you to the home team media for the warm welcome & a big thank you for the light

Thank you judges!

I recently signed with
@AP
to help cover some NBA games!
It’s always been one of my goals to provide images around the world, work with a team of pros, all while being around the sport that I love so much.
The photographer (Mark Terrill) posted about the gear used for this iconic photo.
Fun fact: This was a Kodak/Nikon NC2000 that cost around $20,000 in 1994.
…or about $41,437 in 2024.
I didn’t pick up a camera until I was 22
I shot on AUTO for a full year
I rented gear from my school & learned from YouTube University
How did I get here with my setup & photography?
Let’s talk some gear 👇
Some gear tips on
#NationalCameraDay
Photographers!
Don’t be afraid of a little grain. It’s okay (especially night games) to have a little grain. So you’re using older gear, so what - no gear shaming.
While AI denoise is a good tool - don’t over that either.
If you want to be picky, pick a clean background.
We did it.
This rule was reversed for VIP & outlets.
My editor got the call apologizing for the mistake, and a new email was sent out to all correcting it.
Creatives - you have value, you work hard, don’t let anyone just take your stuff without fair compensation.
Local HS basketball tournament approved my “VIP” credential for my newspaper outlet - but they also REQUIRE I send them ALL my content & grant them rights for free.
This was not stated when we applied, this is a new rule, but email said if we shoot, we agree.
Yeah… No, thanks.
We were both photographing the Diamond League Pre Classic & spent the summer working the Olympic Trials together
5 years later, after another Olympic Trials, at Hayward Field I made it official
(Yes, I set up my own cameras & fired them remotely)
@theTrackQueen
I went through the 2022 USATF Outdoor championships and put together a *rough* list.
Women: NJ, OH, TX
Men: FL, TX, NY
Score it how you please, but this was a fun question!
1) The shot was off in time, see photo 1
2) @ Every department / team - You want cool photos? Invest in good photographers.
@HawkeyeBRay
&
@stephenmally
doing really cool stuff.
Day 5
After working the 10am curling I took an hour bus up into the Pyeongchang mountains in hopes to photograph my first skeleton event
While the journey started out rough (rushed off the bus & left my gloves), I made it work!
More images on my IG (@ HowLaoPhotography)
Day 4
Covered more curling but now that we have our ole reliable shots done I’m starting to play around with different angles. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I think simply trying is always a good thing.
Big day coming up, I’m going to head up to the mountains 🤞
I never get to cheer while I’m photographing the game, so I took the day off to support The Portland Thorns as a fan!
Thank you
@NWSL
for the opportunity to enjoy an incredible game!
Creatives are getting younger & younger.
They are also more talented than ever.
Cost of equipment also getting more affordable.
(These are all GOOD things)
But the job market with massive layoffs & clients not paying, makes this field a very tough one to be in.
Tips ⬇️
Local HS basketball tournament approved my “VIP” credential for my newspaper outlet - but they also REQUIRE I send them ALL my content & grant them rights for free.

Yeah… No, thanks.
Photographed the last ever PAC12 XC Championships. 🥲
Some of my favorite selects and moments from the meet!
Luckily I did NOT get hit with snot from that first shot, extremely thankful for the long lens.

One thing I love about
@ArtButSports
is how he is big he is on crediting photographers.
Anytime anyone tags him in something, he always asks who took it.
Then credits the photographer in the final post.
We appreciate you!!

Love that my community of sports photographer are engaging and active. Got to connect with a few new photogs from the tweet alone.
Debuting the Canon RF 100-300 F2.8 w/ RF 1.4x Extender at this Oregon vs Washington game!
I’ll be using the Canon R3
Turning this into a 140-420 F4!
It might be “too” tight around the end zone area? Or it might be even better. Stay tuned…
Im still waitin on bread from a meet I ran in on JANUARY 29th!😂 I ran in 16 different meets total so far and have only gotten paid from 4 of them. I don’t know another job where you complete the job and dont get paid 4-7 months after the fact!
First day with the 24-105 F2.8 and already showing off why it's worth it!
Here's two focal lengths (105mm & 24mm).
Usually the 24-70 & 70-200 combo would be needed to handle something like this.
When I’m stuck in a creative rut or I want a challenge or (in this case) when I get a new piece of gear - I pack one body one lens & shoot the whole assignment with it.

My first Olympic event ✅ - Here are some of my favorite frames from my 2.5 weeks at the Winter Youth Olympics in Korea.

New gear display for the office! These dry cabinets will help keep my gear dry after a wet shoot, and keep me organized.
I was able to fit a decent amount of gear in there -
R3, R6, 1dxmk2, 1dxmk2, 5D, Ricoh
35, 16-35, 50, 100, 135, RF70-200, EF70-200 , 100-300
The Canon 5D classic was released back in October of 2005
I picked one up for $250, paired it with my 300 F2.8 & put that 3 frames per second to work at the Portland Thorns vs San Diego Wave game
Always & forever invest in glass
Then there are people like Ryan,
That not only photo credits, but gives a nice shoutout in the comments!!
This is why he’s the 🐐
If the WORLD RECORD HOLDER has time to show love, why can’t you??
What are some points of Sports Photography etiquette that feel obvious to pros, but might not be to new photographers?
• Look behind you before you set up
• Leaving enough room for the athletes to finish their race
• Not posting credentials on social media
What else?
Just met with Portland Track / Tracklandia and I’m excited to announce I’ll be serving as the Media Director this year!
We’re going to host a lot of meets with world class talent and I’m happy to be part of this team.
Can’t wait!!
