13 August 1937 - On this day, the Battle of Shanghai began during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It became the war’s largest and longest battle. The Japanese eventually captured the heavily damaged city. Japan deployed poison gas at least 13 times in Shanghai.

A fictitious Heinkel He 113 adapted from a He 100 D-1, as conceived by Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. The propagandist’s plan involved photographing He 100 D-1s at various air bases with differing liveries. These images were then published as He 113 night fighters.

Jonny Smythe, recently honoured with a blue plaque at his former home in Thame, Oxfordshire, where he lived for the final five years of his life. Smythe was a Sierra Leonean RAF officer, one of the first West Africans to serve in the RAF. He served on Short Stirling bombers.

7 August 1714 - On this day, the Russia Navy won its first significant victory against a substantially smaller Swedish fleet at the Battle of Gangut. The fleets met during the Great Northern War (1700-1721) and victory demonstrated the weakness of the Swedish blockade at Hanko.

Today marks 80 years since the atomic bomb Little Boy, dropped from the Silverplate B-29 Enola Gay, destroyed Hiroshima. Combined with the Nagasaki bombing three days later, almost a quarter of a million people died. The vast majority of Hiroshima’s dead were civilians.

5 August 1781 - On this day, British and Dutch ships clashed at the Battle of Dogger Bank with inconclusive results. The fleets met while both were escorting convoys during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch celebrated holding their own against the might of the Royal Navy.

4 August 1944 - On this day, German police discovered Anne Frank and her family in the hidden annex three days after the final entry in her diary. In the following days, Otto Frank’s secretaries returned to the annex, discovered Anne’s papers and resolved to return them post-war

2 August 1939 - On this day, Leo Szilard (pictured) and Albert Einstein wrote to President Franklin Roosevelt urging the US to start a nuclear program based on fears Germany would do the same. The letter started a chain of events that led to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
