On January 27, 1962, the conspirators plan began to fall apart after the government found out about the plot and arrested those suspected of leading the operation. Though jailed for their actions, the sentence was eventually overruled because they weren't provided a fair trial.

Organized by F. C. Saram, their plan was named "Operation Holdfast" and they sought to quickly securing strategic positions around Colombo and prevent troops loyal to the government from reaching them. They would then place senior government officials under house arrest.

By 1961, resentment was growing among Christian about the nationalist policy of the Bandaranaike government. During this time, many left Ceylon for the U.K. There was anger over the govt. targeting Catholic schools and trying to make the army corps more Buddhist.
