70 years ago, Pitt’s Bobby Grier broke barriers in the 1956 Sugar Bowl. A standout from Massillon, Ohio, Grier scored the Panthers’ first touchdown of the 1955 season, helping lead Pitt to a 7–3 record and a Sugar Bowl bid against Georgia Tech. @PittTweet @PittAlumni

#OTD in 1759, construction on Fort Pitt began. In a letter from Capt. Harry Gordon to Col. Henry Bouquet, Gordon stated “We begin our Fort to Day. The General has ordered it to be made of Earth instead of Logs which I think will turn out much better."

In 1958, ground broke for the Civic Arena, with the company performing under the “Melody Tent” until its 1962 opening. From there, the CLO moved to Heinz Hall in the 1970s and finally to the Benedum Center in 1987, where it still performs to this day. 📸CLO at Pitt Stadium.

The Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera debuted at Pitt Stadium in 1946. 🌟 @PittsburghCLO . But after low-flying planes, a tornado, and rainouts plagued performances, CLO president Edgar J. Kaufmann, owner of Kaufmann’s Department Store, pushed for a permanent home.
