1. The last in my series of THREADS on Inflation and the Economy (Part 4 of 4) poses a media-centered explanation for Americans’ negative impressions of the economy and concludes with an exposition of key concepts intended to help us understand the complexities of our economy.

One of the joys of transcribing primary sources is learning about how certain fears and anxieties are perennial. In this letter from 1836, a mother in South Carolina writes to one of her sons in Baltimore about the educational potential of her other son. If the other son is

Some dude thinks sea level rise of a few inches per decade isn't a big deal. I point out several examples showing why that's wrong. Feel free to add your own examples so I can learn more.

@purplesuit It's probably not very useful to argue with someone who thinks the reality of human-caused climate change is some sort of scam, but I'll try: . * Look up Hurricane Sandy. If sea level had been just a few inches higher, how much more millions of dollars of economic damage would.

Honest questions for Chris Martz, Matthew Wielicki et al. Seriously, no snark or animus intended. Please share this with them. 1. What would it take for you to modify your stance on the seriousness of AGW? Do you need to be *personally* affected by a wildfire, flood, drought,

Awesome, Manisha! . I've felt this for a long time -- John Roberts is only the more palatable, polite version of Trump. I'll add it's always sad for me now to teach the VRA and LBJ. It should have been a triumph upon which to build. Now it's a temporary victory that will.

Incredibly grateful for this shout by Janelle Bouie in the New York Times. He adopts my analogy with French Republicanism though I wish I did not have to keep writing about the fall of the American republic.

I've always been fascinated by the spread of New England (and perhaps Puritan?) culture to other parts of the U.S. That culture may be noticeable in the Burnt Over District, Cleveland, Portland, and San Francisco. It's a culture of tolerance and acceptance.

I started collecting a bunch of primary sources for a book project in 2021--2023. Most of these are letters. Some are bills of sale and bonds that mortgaged enslaved persons as collateral to make further investments. I'd like to show these to everyone to illustrate the.

He receives data he doesn't like and how does he respond? By lashing out and firing people. Another competent expert gone. This is what authoritarians do.

I was watching a few minutes of Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman and they were talking about the expectations of citizenship in the early republic. They discussed how citizenship came not just with rights, but responsibilities. Heather speculated that since the '80s and.

Let me highlight a couple of trends I've seen in my feeds today:.1. Global civil society organizations have placed the U.S. on a watchlist and ranked us alongside Turkey, Kenya, and El Salvador. Is this making America "great"?.2. A famous German American influencer asked American

Are you familiar with Francis Fukuyama? The first time I heard that name, there was a negative connotation--the imprudent prediction of "end of history" and all that. But of course, the man is a famous political scientist with an extensive body of work whose reputation should not.

Rosie O'Donnell talks about her move to Ireland due to Trump's authoritarianism. The Irish have welcomed her and she seems to be having a good time. And of course, solid critiques of Trump's America.

I just wrote this passage. Ask yourself, is this imagined conversation: . 1. A northeastern abolitionist talking to a pro-slavery planter in Alabama in 1850? . 2. A climate activist speaking to a fossil fuel apologist in 2025? . Take your pick, they both work. It's very

This is awesome. Thanks, Mark. When I responded to a pro-fossil fuel influencer that renewables are often cheaper, a few anonymous libertarians replied, "Only through government subsidies!". Right. As if fossil fuels have never been subsidized by governments for like 200 years.

This is just what we need, but even faster. Vietnam setting bans on gasoline motorcycles next year (in downtown Hanoi), followed by cars. Ultimately, 72 million gasoline motorcycles will be banned, plus gasoline cars.

Hulk Hogan. I rented a video of some dumb movie he was in that came out in 1991, when I was 8. I laughed. Because I was 8. But now our politics has become so much of what Hogan did or represented--image, fake masculinity, shallow performance, manufactured drama, dumb jokes, "real.

Wanna know something crazy? Earlier today Venus Williams played and won a match at a professional tennis tournament in Washington, D.C. She is forty-five years old. I was a ball kid for one of her earliest matches at the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland. That match was almost.
