🚨NEW VIDEO🚨 An epic clash between Anglo-Saxons, Scots, and Irish Vikings changed the history of the British Isles. But where did it happen? Historians have argued for a century over where Brunanburh might have taken place. Now it's my turn. https://t.co/6q2sWaWVH4

with gambling/smoking/alcohol etc there's a very obvious cost to your behaviour. the effects are very visible. but with social media, because the effects aren't so obvious, you don't consider it a huge problem. but it's just as destructive

I wonder if a divine being gave specific instructions on how to build a craft through which to encounter It which may seem odd to humans but are actually crucial to our own safety in the presence of a super advanced spiritual being. And ignoring those instructions is bad for us

Oh, and a final thing: Idk how many pple picked up on the bit where the aliens give specific instructions on how to build the spaceship, only for humans to ignore it and add unnecessary safety features which nearly kill Jodie Foster...

So I think this film is as important as William James in properly communicating the problems of both religious experience and language. It's personal yet unknowable. You can't prove it to anyone else, and both of you know you can never properly describe it. it has to be felt.

People joke about "Biblically accurate angels" because they're missing the wood for the trees. How do you communicate this totally mind-bending encounter with spiritual beings totally outside of human experience? It's not about wheels-within-wheels (which is about the stars, btw)

The more I've studied the Bible, the more I've realised this is the core of it. I don't believe God zapped someone with a lightning bolt and they began automatically writing. I think it was written by people trying to communicate the incomprehensible Christ event.

This is the core problem of religious language: how can you communicate to people who have not had this incomprehensible experience what it's like? Foster's fantastic acting communicates the desperation and sadness knowing that this experience is fundamentally uncommunicable.

Two days later and I'm still thinking about it. I think it's the most profound modern depiction of the problem of religious experience. Jodie Foster's character has had an incomprehensible experience with no proof. We know that she cannot convince anyone else of it.
Contact (1997) is honestly one of the best science films ever made and it hardly gets a mention. Amazing cinematography, co-written by Carl Sagan, you can really see how Interstellar drew influence from it. We've been observing your earth. Baby.

had to take an online bartending course for work and learned that minors can be identified by their “small stature” and “smooth, unwrinkled faces” 👍

genuinely a baffling beauty trend to me considering these people have been manipulated into the endless pursuit of "youth" and avoiding "aging" and yet hollow cheeks is one of the things that will make you look REALLY old. just completely counter-intuitive
