Doing what our name says, holding Big Tech accountable. #ReinInBigTech

🧵for more than two years we have urged Twitter’s leadership to prioritize safety and hold the platform accountable to its own community standards. Today, the platform is unrecognizable, so we’re stepping away. Here’s why. ⬇️

We’re so excited to see all that @DesignItForUs will accomplish, but they’ll need your support to make it happen. Give them a follow and let’s ensure a safer digital future for all. https://t.co/rsEGt28Ny4

With support from people like you, we coined “surveillance advertising.” We revealed how Google was tracking and retaining abortion seekers' sensitive location data, exposed the dangers of Instagram’s “Teen Accounts,” and so much more. And this work is far from over.

We’ve been doing this long enough to know that in order to win against Big Tech, we need young people at the helm, leading the charge.

This was a big decision, and one we didn’t make lightly. We’re doing this to focus our resources on the youth-led coalition we helped support: @DesignItForUs

You might wonder why we’re still on other social media platforms we're fighting to hold accountable—but they are… well… dominant. We need to meet people where they’re at, and we’re hopeful they’ll partner with us – and you – in creating the digital world we deserve.

By engaging here, we risk feeding an algorithm that amplifies anger and hate, exposing our followers and allies to abuse. We can’t, in good conscience, continue to bring our community into such a toxic environment.

So why did we stay? For over two years, we stayed because the platform was a critical tool for raising awareness, informing the public, and sharing our insights on making the internet safer. But X is no longer that platform.

X has even undermined basic safety tools. The “block” feature, once a vital line of defense, no longer fully shields users, as blocked individuals can still view public posts. This erosion of safety tools makes the platform feel more unsafe than ever. https://t.co/YuYomD1ZSS

And today, November 15, X is changing its terms of service to allow all user content to be used for training third-party models. This change jeopardizes users’ privacy.

X cut entire content safety teams, reducing oversight, and letting harmful content thrive. There’s little accountability, and hateful content is not banned. We cannot support a platform that abandons user safety.

X says hate speech is down in the app. Do you believe them?
