Reflecting on the importance of taking a tentative & flexible stance when working with emergent literacy learners. What might we miss if we follow a pre-set agenda & our own pre-conceived notions of what a child needs? Sensitive observation & responsive teaching are essential!

Want to light up your baby’s brain? Think “serve and return.” 🎾 Much like a tennis match, serve and return entails back and forth interaction during which adult and child trade conversational (and other expressive) turns. This mother/son duo, shared by emma_carlee on TT,

It really worries me when I see events with sessions badged as how to do something specifically in primary and the speaker has never worked a day in that phase in their entire career.

'Someone else can read the newspaper or a scientific work for us and summarize it acceptably. But no one can read a poem for us. The reader of the poem must have the experience himself.' So much to pay attention to by Rosenblatt, with big implications for English teachers.

I’m reading Louise Rosenblatt’s ‘Literature as Exploration’. Essential reading for every English teacher in my view, for understanding what literature is & the relationship between readers & texts.

Education colleagues in the research world, I need your help. Send me research regarding the teaching of encoding and decoding of nonsense words in K-2 Tier 1 instruction. I don't need comments or feelings, just links. TIA

Something is really bothering me with CPD. During my training in the 90s and for the first few yrs of my career, there was a sharp focus on understanding child development. This has all but disappeared from the CPD landscape.

🧵An important part of the primary experience is having a lovely time- adults ringfencing the unique state of childhood and ensuring that primary is a glorious place to be little. Playful and joyful are not the antonyms of high standards and aspiration.
