Folks who have argued for years that Veep is a more accurate representation of Washington, D.C. than House of Cards or The West Wing--congrats on being proved right
Eight months ago, I began hearing concerns about sexually aggressive behavior from
@CawthornforNC
, who is a candidate for Congress. Multiple women came forward to share these stories.
Today, WORLD published the result of my investigation.
Hey I’m a journalist currently working on a story. If you’re someone who has tweeted

and are open to talking about your perspective, please like/reply to this tweet or message me!
SCOOP from me and
@byrdinator
showing that despite an ongoing genocide, the United States is doing little to rescue Uyghur Muslims. In fiscal year 2021, we admitted zero Uyghurs through the refugee program, a State Department spokesperson confirmed to us
With that, I'm excited to announce I'll be joining
@thedispatch
come June!
I'm so excited to join an outlet I have long admired. I'll still be covering politics so as always, my DM's are open for tips, scoops, and invites to connect (I'm a big fan of☕️)
Some ✨professional news✨
Friday was my last day after over two wonderful years
@thedispatch
. I’ll talk about my new gig in a second, but first, some thanks are in order!
My main takeaway is that Marianne Williamson is like that conspiracy theorist next door neighbor that constantly tries to get you to sign up for her essential oil pyramid scheme
FOR A STORY--if you're a black or Hispanic voter who went for President Trump, I want to hear from you! Leave a comment or DM me if you're willing to be interviewed
My fav moments of the
#KavanaughConfirmationHearing
so far:
-
@BenSasse
saying we need Schoolhouse Rock back
-the protester who said; "I'm leaving!" after an initial outburst
-the back & forth about whether its possible to read 42,000 pgs overnight (aka 7,000 pages per hour)
NEWS: It’s my first week with

Some professional✨news✨
Today is my last day at WORLD. I'm so grateful for three fruitful years working with some of the best reporters & editors in the business. It's been a joy.
I'll talk about my new gig in a sec. But first, some thanks are in order.
For a lot of folks, this day isn’t one that we can simply brush past or ignore. Even if the remembering is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or simply hard.
I wrote about what this day, one year ago, was like for me.
wholesome moments of this week:
housemate Christmas tree excursion, attending a party where all the neighborhood moms came over, and a Dispatch bookswap where I achieved my primary objective of furthering my acquaintance with The Babies
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Now seems like a good time to announce that I have accepted my dream job with
@WORLD_mag
and will be bringing you the news from the nation’s capital. Stay tuned folks✌🏾
Sad as I am to leave WORLD, I’m thrilled to join the
@thedispatch
and contribute to the already strong work folks there have been doing. I’ll primarily be editing and working with reporters on both the front and back ends of their reporting and writing. 4/5
We've got a new reporter on the
@CTmagazine
news team, our DC-based political correspondent
@HarvestPrude
!
She brings a ton of enthusiasm and know-how to this new role, and we are excited about the light and insight she'll bring to our coverage. 🏛️
sometimes I think I don’t have an answer to the whole “why are you single” query but then today a man asked me out in a parking lot and I counterattacked by inviting him to my church 😇🥲
Pictured: two of my little brothers and some of their friends helping clean up debris (my family lives about 30 min from some of the hardest hit spots in KY)
For months, lawmakers have warned the Biden administration of the need for urgency in getting Afghan allies out of the country. Those warnings were not heeded.
For this week's Uphill,
@RyanP_Brown
and I covered the fall-out 👇
My heart froze when I read this report this morning. I don't know yet whether or not he was any relation. But I couldn't help picturing my dad, or any of my big cousins or brothers' names in his stead. 1/6
Capitol Hill police are now closing and locking the doors of the House chamber
Cap Hill police making an announcement that protesters have gotten into the Capitol, calling it a "breach" and that's what led to the lockdown
The redesign from
@CTmagazine
is here and I have to say, it’s rather gorgeous.
Thick enough to where you may need to brew several cups of tea to accompany your perusing!
Read this news with sorrow but also, anticipation to see where adventure takes you next. Mindy, as both a writer and a person, you always bring a gutsy, compassionate, clear-eyed perspective. WORLD won't be the same without you
Personal news: I've resigned my position at
@WNGdotorg
with gratitude for 30 yrs reporting, of seeing up close a world of beauty and of need. The fuel for such work isn’t found in viewpoint journalism, and as WNG takes new directions I will too.
Thanks to
@stephenfhayes
and
@JonahDispatch
for opening up their homes, encouraging me to write about topics I found fascinating, and their constant generosity with advice, source recommendations, and of course, dog pictures
ADERHOLT, who didn’t make meeting w/ McCarthy but has supported him, says there’s a risk of a backlash if concessions to anti-McCarthy bloc goes too far, specifically when it comes to committee assignments
What do we want?
AN INFRASTRUCTURE BILL!
When do we want it?
After-they-file-cloture-and-intervening-day-and-cloture-vote-on-the-sub-and-wait-30-hours-and-vote-on-the-sub-and-adoption-of-sub-and-cloture-on-the-shell-and-30-more-hours-and-then-passage
Say it again!
No.
Every time I go to my mechanic he’s always engrossed in conversation with his customers—remembers first names and small details about their lives—and shoots me straight about repairs.
There’s no clever punchline here I just really appreciate Mike
I’ve reached an important milestone in my fitness journey in that I have created a workout specific playlist.
Folks if you have suggestions for hype music please drop ‘em below 👇🏾👇🏾
The fact that people are just walking out seems insane to me. I remember hundreds of arrests during the Brett Kavanaugh hearing, some simply for having signs. Those protesters were nonviolent (though disruptive)
Also,
@mcbelz
is the epitome of graciousness, while also being an energetic and fearless globetrotting reporter. It's been a privilege to learn from her on the foreign policy beat. (PS I want to be you when I grow up)
Welcome to day four of the House speakership elections, where we are about to embark upon the TWELFTH ballot and your area reporter is considering whether to seek out an IV drip of caffeine
me then: there's simply not enough attention paid to eggs. the people demand more news about eggs
me now (is horrified): okay so I did not mean like THIS
Sophia, your meticulous, gritty, on-the-ground reporting on the toughest issues of the day has always been a gift to read. Your work for WORLD really made a difference
Well, this is not news anymore, but this is my last week at WORLD Magazine after nine years on staff. I turned in my notice of resignation on Oct 27.
Here’s my final column for WORLD, bidding farewell to readers:
spending MLK weekend cosplaying as a mom to three boys under ten while their parents celebrate ten years of marriage.
so far, picnics at the park, funny make believe stories at mealtimes, and getting to help with prepping dinner are scoring very high with this crowd
I remember being brought to tears during discussions about slavery in history class. Can remember some kid insisting it “wasn’t that bad” because some slave owners were humane
Slavery was SO MUCH worse than people imagine.
I wrote my dissertation on slavery and it is incredibly traumatizing. In grad school I had to dramatically shift my entertainment habits to cope. No more dramatic or realistic shows and movies. Just escapism.
I guess all I wanted to say was, even if you don't necessarily relate to this (and this is also a reminder for myself), to be gentle in the face of grief that may not seem to make much sense. We could all use more compassion. /end
a perfect interaction just happened: a man at a bar came up to me and my friends and asked what we all did and I said I was a journalist and he said “oh like in spiderman”
I got the email from the Capitol Physicians office last night advising anyone who was in lockdown on Wednesday in a certain committee room to get tested for COVID-19 because of possible exposure
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, holds her smart phone with former US President Donald Trump on the line, as Rep. Matt Rosendale, a Republican from Montana, waves it off during a meeting of the 118th Congress in the House Chamber on Friday.
#SpeakerVote
During the evacuation of the chamber I forgot that I did THIS with my reporters notebook
...fashion designers, please give women’s clothing more/bigger pockets
And in general, truly the heartiest of shoutouts to the entire team at
@thedispatch
. They’re whip smart, kind, funny, and genuine people. It was an honor to be a member of the crew
It’s Friday 📚I have no book updates updates for y’all (
@eviefordham
can attest I resisted the impulse to buy more books this week) !
But what is everyone reading this weekend ?
Special shout-out to
@byrdinator
. Covering Congress has been an adventure! (Also thanks for having the cutest possible kiddos—tell Mr. Lewis and Baby Zoe I say hi)
