Thrilled to share that I'll be starting a PhD in Welsh this year, exploring the elegiac traditions in Welsh (marwnad), Persian & Urdu (مرثیہ / marsiya), with a focus on historic tragedies such as the battles of Karbala & Cilmeri at Bangor University. Grateful to have full funding

We’ll be starting our reading circle this coming Tuesday with Virginia Woolf’s Orlando and a hikayat from Sa’adi's Gulistan. I still have a couple of spots available, which I’m happy to offer to readers outside Balochistan on a first-come, first-served basis.
I'm starting a free online course for learners in Balochistan to explore literature and translation across Urdu, Persian, and English. Places limited to the first fifteen sign-ups. Message me here or email at hammadhrind@gmail.com to register

پاکستانی دہریوں کا بھی جواب نہیں۔ جب خدا پر یقین ہی نہیں تو اتنا کشٹ اٹھانے کی کیا ضرورت تھی؟ نہ خدا ہی مِلا نہ... بقول مولانا رومی ای قوم به حج رفته کجایید؟ کجایید؟ معشوق همین جاست، بیایید بیایید

Interesting that in Tajik Persian, the word for carrot is сабзӣ سبزی sabzī, which means vegetable in other varieties of Persian (and in many other langs, such as Urdu and Turkish (سبزه sebze), which borrowed it from Persian. The synonyms listed here include زردک zardak and گزر

The niyat of namāz is traditionally done in Persian among the Hui of China, e.g. the niyat for namāz-i pēšīn recorded on the page in the picture: هویها یعنی مسلمانان چینیزبان (نه «چینی») عادت دارند نیت نماز را به فارسی انجام دهند. عکس ذیل نیت نماز پیشین را نشان میدهد.

Asp اسپ in Balochi and Indo-Persian too. As someone who learnt Iranian Persian, coming across Tajik and Dari varieties at times feels like reading an older register of the language. Yet parts of it also strike me as oddly familiar because Urdu has mainly borrowed from the Eastern

Ichthys (from Greek ἰχθύς 'fish') or the sign of the fish is thought to be an early secret Christian symbol used by Christians to recognise other believers to avoid persecution. The letter I (iota) represents Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), χ (chi) represents Χρῑστός (anointed) and so on.

Ahsan Lakhnavi in 1908 on attempting to locate Mir's grave
اُسے ڈھونڈتے میرؔ کھوئے گئے کوئی دیکھے اس جستجو کی طرف it's the 215th death anniversary of the greatest poet of Urdu, Mir Taqi Mir (died 20 Sep 1810, Lucknow). That's the memorial/place where Mir's grave was said to be. Tragically, the grave is lost - use DhūñDte Mīr kho.e ga.e !
