🚨 New in JDE! How accurate are livestock stats in Africa? Our new paper shows that self-reported livestock data in Ethiopia underestimates ownership by up to 39%. Nudges help a bit—direct counting helps a lot. Read: https://t.co/h6YyapB4mz #Livestock #EconTwitter #DevEcon #JDE

5. Fortunately, even modest improvements in protocol accuracy can have big impacts on accuracy

4. We also show that some of the “gold standard” protocols (like GPS-based areas) suffer from non-classical measurement errors and can generate spurious IR.

3. We find that error in both sets of measures contributes to an apparent IR – in our data, addressing both sources of error results in no significant size-productivity relationship.

2. To begin with, we consider a much fuller range of protocols for measuring plot area and production, reflecting the range of current data collection practices (six alternative measures for estimating land area and six different protocols for measuring production).

Our collaborative paper on predicting yield at scale using different ground and remote sensing techniques is just out. We conclude using remote sensing to predict yield at scale is not useful when the training data quality is low. @luckywinner1 @Haileaya1

How sensitive are empirical assessments of the size-productivity relationship to alternative protocols of production & land area measurement? @Haileaya1 (@ODID_QEH) discusses this in relation to a study of 3 maize growing districts in Ethiopia at today's CSAE Research Workshop.
