For a while, people have wondered what sort of impact psychedelics might have on individuals with a history of psychotic disorders. What might go wrong? Could any potential benefits occur? https://t.co/7TLqw6CFzm

This is a good preprint. It’s not a big shock that there are risk of HT-2A agonist The risks are most likely only of concern for a really select populations…people with a very rare, terminal cancer. Don’t flip out y’all

TIL I am anti-psychedelics and a big pharma shill! Seriously, though, the replies are unhinged. Science Derangement Syndrome?

A tolerability trial is really needed to get a solid understanding of risks. Interviews and surveys aren’t gonna do the job. Plus, a trial is much safer than use in the wild Do check this out!

Psych*delics might not be universally harmful for people with psychotic disorders, but more careful studies need to be conducted. Don’t try this at home, folks! Also, the insight into hallucinations is a puzzling piece of data that also fits with a survey study we conducted.

But it wasn’t all life-changing experiences. Some people really didn’t feel like psychs impacted long-term… they were just kind of like, “Whatever, it’s fun!” I’m guessing this experience is more common in psychedelic-using circles than is often acknowledged

Long-term? Much like other psychonauts, people reported a range of benefits impacting all areas of their lives. Particularly noteworthy to me was that some people decided to take getting treatment for their condition more seriously.

Most surprisingly, some people (not all!) reported having spontaneous insight into their hallucinations during the trip. People described eureka moments where they realized the “voices” they were dealing with were all “in their heads.”

A big aspect of coping with a psychotic disorder that people often don’t realize is dealing with the stigma attached to the diagnosis. Our participants often shared that they felt the biggest benefit of their experiences was cultivating a sense of self-compassion

It’s also relevant to note that a few people went to the hospital during the acute effects, but in most cases these incidents weren’t serious (see supplement!). https://t.co/nb5BhidsoE

Much like other psychedelic users, our sample reported potential challenges during the acute effects, with anxiety & somatic symptoms being the biggest contributors.

It has been fascinating but y’all in the US and probably the UK as well are in a bubble with how much “mainstreaming” of psychedelics you think there has been Plus someone here has literally told me they find researching psychedelics borrowing… this basically blew my mind

An example of this is having to recommend someone *working* in psychedelic research read how to change your mind because they didn’t get the cultural context They literally had not heard of the book 😂

Believe it or not, Sweden is a lot more conservative than Alabama in a lot of ways Especially, surrounding psychedelics… it’s been something to observe I don’t think the so-called renaissance really made it over here. Or the post-hype bubble cynicism

Interview with Dr. Steve Siff, author of Acid Hype, which I think is one of the best books out there on the cultural history of psych*delics. Before the counterculture era, psych*delics were considered pretty square... Tune in for more & share the podcast if u enjoy it 😉

Yes, it is not stable there right now, unfortunately. Lots of science is going on in Sweden, though, such as the ERC-funded psilocybin for prolonged-grief disorder trial I came to Sweden for 🍄🧠⚡️
