Plastics are fueling the climate crisis. By 2040, up to 19% of global greenhouse gas emissions will stem from plastics. To meet the goal of 1.5° global temperature rise & to #BeatPlasticPollution, we need a plastics treaty that reduces plastic production.

During this important week, the international community will discuss the zero draft of the future instrument to end plastic pollution that I was mandated to prepare at #INC2.

I thank Member States for their trust for the development of a zero draft of the #PlasticsTreaty with the support of the Secretariat. I will do the utmost to ensure that this document reflects faithfully our discussions, as well as the contributions and views of Member States.

Grateful for the French hospitality in hosting #INC2, for Member States in remaining faithful to the Nairobi spirit and for the Secretariat’s support! Paris has been an important steppingstone in the process to adopt a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution.

Every day, the equivalent of over 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic is dumped into our oceans, rivers & lakes. This #WorldEnvironmentDay is a call to #BeatPlasticPollution. We must work as one to break our addiction to plastic, champion zero waste & build a circular economy.

Plastic pollution is more than just a waste management issue. It is a climate issue. It is a nature issue. It is a health issue. To protect people and the planet, we must #BeatPlasticPollution.

Now is the time to find common solutions to common challenges. We must cooperate. We must adapt multilateral institutions & foster trust where it is most needed. The urgency of global challenges demands bold & swift action.

As we begin negotiations towards a global agreement to #BeatPlasticPollution, I was pleased to visit @mrgreenafrica here in Nairobi, with INC Chair @GustavoMezaCua1. Inspiring to see examples of how companies are innovating in plastic recycling, waste collection & trade.

Plastics are fossil fuels in another form & pose a serious threat to human rights, the climate & biodiversity. As negotiations towards an agreement to #BeatPlasticPollution continue, I call on countries to look beyond waste and turn off the tap on plastic.
