Can't believe we're haggling over Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Cole Hamels with classes like this coming

For all the hand-wringing over what the Phillies have done (or haven't done) this offseason, dollar for dollar, I'd still rather be the Phillies than the Mets🤷️

Interesting to look at this way, and my gut says they baked in more volatility because there's a real chance that Robert, Semien, and Polanco just aren't good. I do like Robert as a change-of-scenery guy. Bichette is a good hitter. They just... didn't change in the right ways?
@Buster_ESPN Mets 2026 Lineup Changes OUT: Alonso, Nimmo, McNeil, Taylor .744 Combined 2025 OPS (not weighted by # of PA) $72 Million current combined contract AAV IN: Bichette, Polanco, Semien, Robert .748 Combined 2025 OPS (again, unweighted by PA) $110 Million current combined contract

There are, quite literally, maybe a dozen second basemen in the history of baseball better than Chase Utley. I don't understand why he isn't a surefire Hall of Famer.

This model really doesn't like Justin Crawford (90 wRC+ over 407 PA) but I kind of expect him to beat it in the sense that... it's kind of what he does? His worst full-season wRC+ in the minors was 131. If the jump in BB% sticks, I like him as the ninth batter in the lineup

I teeter between this feeling and "if a few things break their way, I like this team better than last year" at least a few times per day.
Listen, I have a reputation of being pretty optimistic when it comes to the Phillies: This team is worse than it was in 2025. Far worse. No question. It’s pretty crazy that the front office doesn’t see it that way, but from where I’m sitting, it feels pretty obvious.

Even if the Realmuto deal winds up being a mistake, the Phillies do still have a chunk of payroll coming off the books after the season, and guys like Suarez and Bader give you some short-term upside and the flexibility to pivot after the season.

I'd feel much better about the lineup if it was something like: Turner Harper Schwarber Suarez Garcia Marsh / Bader Stott / Sosa Realmuto Crawford LF isn't a literal "platoon," but you're finding Bader opportunities to play most of the week in LF or CF. Crawford plays a lot.

The picture would obviously be more crowded with Bader, but it's a long season and - even if there's upside - the Phillies have created a scenario where it could go really wrong. I think you could reasonable hide Marsh / Crawford against LHP and find playing time for everyone

And those are just the obvious ones, because there are some less obvious outcomes like... IF: Castellanos is still with the Phillies IF: De La Cruz is a thing IF: Rincones Jr. gets a push It's just hard to feel confident in any one outfield position right now.

And if I were building this baseball team, there are just way too many "ifs" and "maybes" in the outfield for my comfort level. IF: Marsh is as good against RHP IF: Kemp is the right-handed LF platoon IF: Crawford can hit in MLB IF: Crawford can play CF IF: Garcia can rebound

I think people have "debunked" the myth of "protection" in modern baseball lineups. BUT, I do think it's obvious the Phillies need someone to hit behind Turner / Harper / Schwarber who can cash in on the opportunities they create. Bohm's .123 ISO just isn't going to cut it

I think there's some justifiable concern over Suarez's defense given his age - in a vacuum. But the Phillies are otherwise going with Bohm - in a contract year; who is also not a good defender; who doesn't offer a fraction of the offensive upside.

There was a world where the Phillies were ready to commit an additional ~$30m to payroll this offseason and I think there's a really strong argument to making a pivot to Eugenio Suarez *and* Harrison Bader.

I think this is *the* example of where the Phillies would like to be competitive - but can't - because of the luxury tax. I think a lot of teams would be in on Valdez at something like 3 / $90m, but the Phillies would get killed on short-term / high AAV deals right now
"I think when free agency started, they were looking for a 6/7-year deal. He's not going to get that." Framber Valdez might have to settle for a short-term, high AAV deal, says @JimBowdenGM.
