This statue is really strange, part of a Sanxingdui exhibit at our local mall (cool!). It's concrete-ish, not styrofoam, and no obvious cuts. It's huge and must be extremely heavy. How did it get there? How will it leave? I guess I should start to worship it?

Seeing Tianfu in Chengdu, I wonder whether one of the tricks is to move around the business district (seen elsewhere as well). This is unused in the US, and perhaps not possible due to local control. Tianfu is totally offset from historical Chengdu.

assuming life is prevalent, then many (intelligent) life-harboring planets have already been wiped out in an instant by very rare but horrible events; many will suffer the same fate in the future. [scariest, if we ignore the heat death of the universe].

China will design the next generation lithography, send people to the moon, and code up AI, but still will never be able to design a useable airline website.

I don't know where it was published, and this is probably just reporting how people are responding -- but given the numbers, at best it reflects those responses and not reality.

This has been going around, pretty sure the math doesn't work out at all (eg, not enough people were added in 2024 to go from 40% to 50%).

In my FP piece, I explore why China’s sudden reversal on its banquet dining crackdown came about. What began as a well-intentioned anti-corruption directive was taken to extremes by an overzealous local bureaucracy. The result was a chilling effect on the.

In honor of @CurtExplores, or maybe someone else, went to the (free!) Changde City Museum today. Fascinating look from the very beginnings of China through the horrific Battle of Changde, with some pretty amazing wood carvings and pottery and stuff. Pretty great little museum.

Spoke to a Chinese friend today who was recently home in a Chinese major city for a few weeks. He said al of his late 20s friends are bummed out and don’t think their futures will be good. 9-9-6 is real but the work is performative to keep your boss happy. All bullshit. Tons.
