Our Sarcophagus is thought to depict a Pictish king, Constantine, killed by Vikings and subsequently venerated as a saint by the Strathclyde Britons. It possibly dates to the late 9th century and was rediscovered in our ancient graveyard in 1855.

These stones are special as the Vikings didn’t usually use grave markers. It’s something we only see around the 10th c. You can see the stones in the Museum, in the Monks Dormitory

Note the pointed beard, long hair, and most importantly, small, round shield held on shoulder straps on the left side of the body.

Fantastic image showing the twin peaks of Dumbarton Rock, known as Alt Clut ('Height/Rock of the Clyde') in the local Cumbric / Brittonic language of Yr Hen Ogledd (the Welsh 'Old North'). In 870, it was taken from the Clyde Britons by Vikings after a four-month siege.

The Galloway Hoard was deposited at a time the Kingdom of Strathclyde would have been interacting with the many peoples of the Irish Sea Region. The

and Anglian elements in these caches would have been very familiar to the Strathclyde Britons!

mounds. We think the lost Doomster Hill in Govan was a BA burial mound, later converted into a stepped 't(h)ing' assembly mound like Mann's Tynwald. Our Sunstone may also be a reused BA standing stone!

Cyngen ap Cadell set the pillar in the C9th in honour of his great grandfather Elisedd ap Gwylog (Eliseg). Its purpose - to show Powys’ defiant independence.

Breaking ❗️Brill pony-owning visitor Jenny may have solved the mystery of why our Viking-Age Sunstone has odd, almost human-like, feet: they are, most likely, the part of the horse's leg between fetlock and hoof and the angles are explained by the fact the horse is galloping! 🐎
