I started learning Japanese in college but I didn’t actually start speaking and reading it with any skill until I started going to karaoke and watching a lot of stupid variety shows in Japan. You usually need a reason to learn things, and hobbies/fun is one of the best reasons
Learning japanese so you can read untranslated VNs is the equivalent of adding bottled lime juice to your taco tuesday night to make it more "authentic"
