Because it's hard and I don't know if it gets easier, tbh. It just gets harder in different ways. I am probably being a bit more angsty about this because I'm at the cusp of submitting another pitch that could very well be scrapped and the thought is scary, but. .

But if you haven't done the thing at all yet, your first duty is to just. do it. It doesn't have to be good or complete. It just has to exist. Once it exists, you can think of what you want to do to make it exist better, or whether you want to do this at all.

And after a lot of pages. I somehow managed to debut. And then I got my own short series. And now I'm struggling to get another lol. So all I can really say is it comes down to just. doing the thing, and using all the tools at your disposal to get better at it.

For someone who had only worked digitally and had very bad fundamentals, I watched my art almost. degrade before my eyes? as I had to relearn everything I had only haphazardly picked up by hand.

It was only when I moved to Japan for work after college that I considered really doing comics here. And that's when I finally applied to school and started learning everything from scratch once again. It was a very humbling experience!.

It was kind of the same thing that happened with me and college. I wanted to go to art school, but that was a hard no with my parents so I just decided to draw on my own while pursuing Japanese studies.

I didn't start learning Japanese out of any particular interest to draw manga in Japan, just out of a broader interest in Japan itself. In fact, I had high hopes that I would be able to make a career as a comic artist in the states, but that fell through.

I didn't continue it past 3 pages, I don't think lol. but it was key in actually getting me to start doing the thing, you know? After that, I gradually started making more and more complete things. First a webcomic, then two, then some oneshots.

I started drawing manga before even knowing what drawing manga took at all. And I kind of think that's important. Art classes and the like are helpful (I mean, I went to manga school for two years!), but in the end. you just have to start. Like, this was literally my first try:

Assuming you're asking how I ended up drawing manga, the simple answer is. I just did. But answering just that is pretty disingenuous, so I'll clarify in more detail. I started all of this before learning Japanese and way before moving to Japan.
